Moeen Ali has revealed how lessons learned while playing under MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings in the IPL influenced his leadership during the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons’ historic run to the CPL 2026 title.

The Falcons completed their remarkable campaign by defeating the Jamaica Kingsmen by eight wickets in the final at Kensington Oval. The franchise, competing in only its third Caribbean Premier League season, chased down 171 with 20 balls remaining to claim its maiden title.

For Moeen, however, the triumph was not simply about what happened during the final. The former England all-rounder believes some of the leadership principles he absorbed during his four seasons with CSK played an important role in helping him manage the Falcons.

Moeen Ali credits MS Dhoni for captaincy lessons

Moeen spent four seasons with CSK between 2021 and 2024 and was part of the franchise’s IPL-winning campaigns in 2021 and 2023. During that period, he had the opportunity to work closely with Dhoni and observe his approach to T20 captaincy.

Speaking after the Falcons’ CPL triumph, Moeen explained that Dhoni changed the way he thought about managing a bowling attack.

“I learnt a lot from MS about the importance of having lesser good players but getting everyone on the same page.”

He then explained another lesson that had a particularly strong influence on his captaincy:

“The other thing I learnt from him is you have six bowlers generally in T20s, and it’s not about whom to bowl; it’s about who not to bowl. That changed my whole mindset on captaincy.”

For Moeen, the idea was about simplifying decisions rather than overcomplicating them. Understanding which bowler might struggle in a particular situation can make tactical decisions easier for a captain.

How Dhoni’s approach changed Moeen’s thinking?

Moeen explained that identifying the right situations for individual bowlers helped reduce the pressure on him as captain.

Instead of constantly searching for the perfect bowling change, the captain could assess the conditions, identify the bowlers who were less suited to a particular phase and then trust his instincts with the remaining options.

That philosophy became especially relevant during the Falcons’ title-winning campaign.

Moeen spoke about constructing a balanced bowling attack featuring two wrist-spinners, two pace bowlers at the top and two death-bowling options. Managing those combinations required clear thinking throughout the tournament.

Falcons complete historic CPL 2026 campaign

The Antigua & Barbuda Falcons’ title victory was particularly significant because it came in only their third season in the CPL.

The Falcons defeated Jamaica Kingsmen by eight wickets after restricting them to 170/9. Pakistan spinner Sufyan Moqim produced the standout bowling performance with 4/14, while Maaz Sadaqat’s 114 off 58 balls kept Jamaica in the contest.

The Falcons then chased the target in just 16.4 overs, reaching 173/2.

Amir Jangoo scored 57, while Hasan Nawaz remained unbeaten on 47. The pair added an unbeaten 89-run partnership to take the Falcons across the finishing line.

Moeen’s other CSK lesson: Keep communication simple

Moeen also revealed how Dhoni approached team communication at CSK.

Rather than filling the schedule with lengthy meetings, Dhoni preferred players to communicate naturally during training sessions. Moeen recalled that batting discussions were often encouraged during net practice rather than being confined to formal team meetings.

“MS Dhoni used to say batting meetings should be done in practice.”

Moeen explained that this approach allowed players to discuss situations while actually training, rather than sitting in a meeting room where concentration could fade.

It was another example of the practical leadership style Moeen observed during his time at CSK.

The Falcons’ CPL 2026 triumph gave Moeen an opportunity to put those lessons into practice in a completely different environment.

He also acknowledged the contribution of the coaching staff and support team, while describing the title as particularly meaningful for the franchise and its players.

“It’s been a tough journey, but a great journey.”

Moeen’s journey from playing under Dhoni at CSK to captaining the Falcons to their first CPL championship is a striking example of how T20 cricket allows ideas and leadership methods to travel between leagues.
