Nasser Hussain names the next coach of England Test team

England‘s hunt for a new Test head coach has gathered momentum following Brendon McCullum‘s departure, and former captain Nasser Hussain believes the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has a clear direction to follow. Reflecting on the end of the Bazball era, Hussain argued that England now need a coach who can restore discipline, meticulous planning and consistency after a disappointing finish to McCullum’s tenure.

Notably, McCullum stepped down after four years in charge of the Test side, bringing an end to a spell that began with remarkable success but concluded with a sharp decline in results. As the ECB prepares to identify its next leader, Hussain has made a strong case for a familiar face to take over the role.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Hussain stressed that England’s next appointment should be someone who excels in the finer aspects of coaching and preparation.

“If you’re going to keep Rob Key, whose attention to detail is not his strongest suit, then below him you need someone who is absolutely across everything and doesn’t miss a trick,” Hussain said.

The former England skipper believes that quality has been missing from the Test setup in recent years and feels it is essential if England are to return to competing consistently against the world’s top sides. Hussain then revealed his preferred candidate, naming Zimbabwean legend Andy Flower as the ideal successor.

“For me, the best person for that would be Andy Flower by a country mile. Flower took England to number one in the world. I love Flower’s approach to coaching. He was meticulous in everything that he did. That’s what’s been lacking in this England Test side. I would do anything if I was Rob Key and the ECB to go and get Andy Flower,” added Hussain.

Hussain’s backing is rooted in Flower’s outstanding record during his previous spell with England. Between 2009 and 2014, Flower oversaw one of the most successful periods in the team’s modern Test history. England won three Ashes series under his leadership, including the historic 2010-11 triumph in Australia, while also climbing to the No. 1 position in the ICC Test rankings. His reputation for detailed planning, tactical awareness and thorough preparation earned widespread respect across international cricket.

However, bringing Flower back may not be an easy task. The iconic cricketer is currently the head coach of IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and remains one of the most sought-after coaches in franchise cricket.

ECB yet to approach candidates after Brendon McCullum’s exit

McCullum’s reign transformed England’s approach to Test cricket almost immediately after his appointment in 2022. The aggressive “Bazball” philosophy produced spectacular early results, with England winning 11 of their first 13 Test matches under the former New Zealand captain. But that momentum gradually faded. England lost eight of their final 12 Tests, with a heavy 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia ultimately bringing McCullum’s tenure to an end and prompting the ECB to seek a fresh direction.

ECB chief executive Richard Gould confirmed that no candidates have yet been approached for the vacancy. He added that managing director of men’s cricket Rob Key will oversee the recruitment process as England look to appoint a coach capable of rebuilding the Test side for the future.
