The debate over the greatest cricketer of all time has produced countless arguments, with legends from different eras making compelling cases. While Sachin Tendulkar is widely regarded as one of the finest batters ever, former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee believes another iconic name deserves the ultimate honour.

The question of who is the greatest cricketer of all time is almost impossible to settle. The sport has produced several extraordinary players across generations, making comparisons between batters, bowlers and all-rounders particularly difficult. For Lee, however, the answer is clear. Speaking on the BeerBiceps Podcast, the former Australian pacer picked South African great Jacques Kallis as the best cricketer ever, while maintaining that Tendulkar remains the greatest batter he has seen.
“I’ve always said that I think that the best batsman to ever play the game is Sachin Tendulkar. But the best cricketer is Jacques Kallis. He’s got the best numbers in the world. If you look at his stats, the stats don’t lie. He’s incredible,” Lee said.
The distinction made by Lee is important. Tendulkar’s extraordinary batting career has made him one of the most celebrated figures in cricket history, but Kallis’ ability to contribute significantly with both bat and ball gives him a unique claim when the discussion shifts from the best batter to the best all-round cricketer.
Proteas legend’s remarkable numbers make a strong case
Kallis’ record across formats is among the most impressive in international cricket. The South African played 166 Tests, scoring 13,289 runs at an average of 55.37. His Test career included 45 centuries and 58 fifties. With the ball, Kallis was equally valuable. He picked up 292 Test wickets, including five five-wicket hauls, while also taking 200 catches. His ability to produce important breakthroughs and contribute heavily with the bat made him one of the most complete players the game has seen.
In ODIs, Kallis scored 11,579 runs in 328 matches at an average of 44.36. He registered 17 centuries and 86 fifties while also claiming 273 wickets. His ODI career further demonstrated the extraordinary balance between his batting and bowling abilities. Kallis finished his international career with more than 25,000 runs and over 500 wickets, a combination that remains incredibly difficult to match.

Sachin Tendulkar’s numbers remain extraordinary
While Lee placed Kallis above Tendulkar as an all-round cricketer, there is little doubt about the Indian legend’s standing as a batter. Tendulkar remains the leading run-scorer in both Test and ODI cricket. He accumulated 15,921 runs in 200 Tests, including 51 centuries, while scoring 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs with 49 centuries.
His 100 international centuries remain one of cricket’s most iconic records. Tendulkar was also the first batter to score a double century in men’s ODI cricket and played a pivotal role in India’s 2011 ODI World Cup triumph.
