India’s team selection has become a major talking point since captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss at opted to bowl in the fourth T20I against New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland. With India already securing an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, the team management got opportunity to experiment with its playing combination while keeping an eye on future assignments.
Two names attracting particular attention were experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar and teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Both players were part of India’s T20I squad for the New Zealand tour, but their absence from the playing XI has raised questions among fans.
The reasons behind their omission were different. Bhuvneshwar’s recent performances put his place under scrutiny, while Sooryavanshi’s situation was closely linked to India’s batting combination and the return of an injured teammate.
Why is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi not playing today’s match?
Vaibhav has been left out of India’s playing XI to accommodate Ishan Kishan, who returns to the side after recovering from an injury. Iyer confirmed the change at the toss, explaining that Ishan Kishan comes in for the young left-handed batter.
The decision comes despite Sooryavanshi making a strong impression in the previous match. The 15-year-old smashed 45 runs off just 19 balls in Wellington, forming a 133-run opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma. His aggressive approach helped India chase down a target of 199 in only 13.2 overs.
Sooryavanshi’s innings demonstrated why he is considered one of India’s exciting young batting prospects. His ability to attack from the beginning gave India a flying start and put New Zealand’s bowlers under immediate pressure.
However, with Ishan returning to fitness, the team management had to make a selection call. India’s established batting options and the need to manage the squad’s combination meant that Sooryavanshi had to make way.
Why is Bhuvneshwar Kumar not playing today’s game?
Bhuvneshwar has also been dropped from the playing XI, with India bringing in Mayank Yadav as a replacement. Skipper Iyer opened up about the change at the toss, describing the switch as a team selection decision.
Bhuvi has struggled to make a significant impact during the first three matches of the series. He conceded 49 runs without taking a wicket in the opening T20I, gave away 50 runs while claiming one wicket in the second game, and finished with figures of 0/40 in the third match.
These expensive spells have made it difficult for Bhuvneshwar to maintain control, particularly against New Zealand’s aggressive batters. His experience and ability to swing the new ball remain valuable assets, but the team management has opted to try a different pace combination for the Auckland encounter.
Meanwhile, Mayank offers additional pace and could provide India with a different bowling option on a ground where batters can score quickly. His inclusion gives the team an opportunity to assess his effectiveness under challenging conditions.
