Pakistan have made a significant change to their squad for the ongoing ODI Tri-Series 2026, releasing opening batter Saim Ayub from the remainder of the tournament.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the decision on October 26 after Ayub requested permission to return to domestic cricket to work on his batting and rebuild his confidence. The move comes following a difficult run for the left-handed opener, who has struggled to make an impact in the tournament.
Pakistan, meanwhile, have already secured their place in the final after winning their first three matches. The team will now look to maintain its momentum ahead of the title clash scheduled for October 31 in Lahore.
Why has Saim Ayub been released from Pakistan’s squad?
Ayub’s release follows a disappointing run of performances in the ongoing tri-series featuring Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka. The young opener has been unable to provide the team with the starts expected from him at the top of the order.
His latest setback came during Pakistan’s dramatic one-wicket victory over England on October 25. Ayub managed just six runs before being dismissed, leaving Pakistan under pressure during their chase.
The PCB stated that Ayub discussed his situation with head coach Mike Hesson and expressed a desire to return to domestic cricket to work on his batting form.
“Respecting Saim’s decision and appreciating his honest assessment of his current form, the team management and national selection committee have mutually agreed to accept this request,” the PCB said in its statement.
The decision gives Ayub an opportunity to work on the technical and mental aspects of his game away from the immediate pressure of international cricket.
Although his release represents a setback, returning to domestic competition could help the opener regain rhythm and confidence before his next opportunity with Pakistan.
Saim Ayub’s replacement for the remainder of the tri-series
The Pakistan selection committee has named Sahibzada Farhan as Ayub’s replacement for the remaining matches of the tri-series.
Farhan brings recent experience and confidence after representing Pakistan in the shortest format. He was also appointed captain of Pakistan’s T20I side for the series against Sri Lanka earlier this month and led the team at the Asian Games.
His inclusion gives Pakistan another option at the top of the batting order as they prepare for the decisive stages of the tournament.
Farhan is known for his aggressive approach and ability to score quickly, qualities that could be valuable in ODI cricket. However, the team management will need to determine his role and batting position based on the balance of the playing XI.
His return to the ODI setup also provides an opportunity to demonstrate that his recent performances can translate into success in the 50-over format.
