Parthiv Patel explains why Vaibhav Suryavanshi is yet to make his India debut

India’s wait to hand the 15-year-old batting sensation a debut continues as Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who lit up IPL 2026 with Rajasthan Royals (RR), remained on the bench during the T20I series against Ireland and was once again left out of India’s playing XI for the opening T20I against England.

While fans and former cricketers have been eager to see the teenage prodigy in Indian colours, former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel believes the youngster’s opportunity is only a matter of time. However, Patel stressed that managing a player of Suryavanshi’s age requires clear communication and patience from the coaching staff.

Parthiv Patel backs communication-first approach for Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Speaking on JioStar, Patel said he expects Suryavanshi to make his India debut at some stage during the ongoing series, but insisted that the team management must be transparent about his role. The former India wicketkeeper added that keeping Suryavanshi informed about the team’s plans would help him remain patient while adjusting to life in the national setup.

“I feel that at some point in this series, Vaibhav Suryavanshi will definitely get an opportunity. But at this point in time, communication is something which is very important. You know, when you are part of a coaching staff, you have to make sure that you are giving away the right signals to a batter. Even if you are not going to make him play, you have to tell him that fact. He’s a 15-year-old kid. You have to speak to him carefully. You have to teach him a little patience. Because when you are playing for India, when you are picked for India, there are a lot of other players as well who have done really well,” Patel said.

Patel also defended India’s current batting lineup, pointing out that several established performers are already occupying the top-order spots, making it difficult for the teenager to break straight into the playing XI. He highlighted Sanju Samson’s recent performances and also praised Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma, explaining that the competition for places remains extremely strong.

“Talking about Sanju Samson. You know, he was the Player of the Series in the World Cup. You have Ishan Kishan, who is batting at No. 3 and is the No. 1 ICC-ranked player. No. 2 is Abhishek Sharma. At this point in time, there is no place, and you have to communicate that really well to Vaibhav Suryavanshi,” Patel stated.

Suryavanshi earned his maiden India call-up after a record-breaking IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals. The teenage opener finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, amassing 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.30 to claim the Orange Cap. Although his international debut has been delayed, Patel believes it is only a matter of time before one of Indian cricket’s brightest young talents gets his opportunity on the biggest stage.
