Punjab Kings batter Shashank Singh has responded to serious allegations levelled against him and his family by a former domestic cook regarding assault, wrongful confinement and abuse. The controversy surfaced after an FIR was registered in Bhopal based on a complaint filed by Vipendra Singh Tomar, who alleged that he was physically assaulted and mistreated while working at the cricketer’s residence.

Former cook alleges assault and wrongful confinement

The controversy began after Tomar, who was reportedly hired as a cook through a family acquaintance, accused Shashank, his father and their driver of assaulting him during his brief stint at the family’s bungalow in Nilbad, Bhopal. According to media reports, Tomar joined the household on June 25, with the promise of a monthly salary of ₹15,000 along with food and accommodation. However, he claimed that he decided to resign after just one day because of what he described as an abusive work environment and alleged mistreatment of domestic staff.

Tomar further alleged that his decision to leave angered the family. In his complaint, he claimed that his mobile phone was taken away and that when he asked for it back on June 28, Shashank, his father and their driver allegedly entered his room, confined him, assaulted him and later forced him out of the house.

Based on the complaint, the Bhopal Police registered an FIR under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to voluntarily causing hurt, verbal abuse involving obscene language and common intention. The case is now under investigation.

Shashank Singh reacts on the allegations against him and his family

As the allegations gained traction on social media, Shashank and his family issued a detailed response, categorically denying every accusation made against them. Speaking to PTI, the Punjab Kings batter claimed that Tomar had secured employment by falsely presenting himself as an experienced chef but later admitted that he lacked the necessary cooking skills.

Shashank also alleged that the family became suspicious after noticing Tomar entering private areas of the house, including bedrooms, where he allegedly recorded videos and took photographs without permission. The cricketer admitted that the family checked Tomar’s phone and deleted the videos, stating that the recordings violated their privacy and raised concerns about the family’s safety.

“Nothing like that happened. A person who comes on the evening of the 25th and leaves on the morning of the 28th – how can you call that keeping someone hostage? The man came to us saying, ‘I know how to cook. I can prepare all kinds of food.’ But then he himself admitted that he actually didn’t know how to cook properly. So how can you trust a person like that?” said Shashank.

“He came into the house and started recording videos of bedrooms. He even entered the bedroom, where expensive and luxury items were kept, recorded videos there, and sent them to other people. He had come through one of my father’s friends, who recommended him saying that he knew how to cook all these dishes. That’s why he was brought to the house, but as soon as he arrived, he demanded an advance payment of Rs 20,000,” Shashank alleged.
