Mumbai Indians have decided to part ways with bowling coach Lasith Malinga ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The move comes after former MI all-rounder Kieron Pollard took over as head coach, signalling a new direction for the five-time IPL champions.
Malinga’s departure marks the end of his latest stint with the franchise, where he played a crucial role in shaping the team’s bowling unit. With Mumbai Indians looking to reshape their coaching structure, several experienced members of the support staff have also reportedly been shown the door.
Why did Mumbai Indians part ways with Lasith Malinga?
The primary reason behind Malinga’s exit appears to be Mumbai Indians’ decision to restructure their coaching staff following the appointment of Pollard as head coach. The franchise is looking to establish a fresh approach under its new leadership, with changes being made to align the support staff with the team’s future plans.
The transition from Mahela Jayawardene to Pollard has brought a significant shift in the team’s coaching structure. The management appears keen to give the new head coach greater freedom to implement his ideas and build a coaching group that complements his vision for the upcoming season.
However, the decision is not limited to Malinga alone. Mumbai Indians have also parted ways with other members of their established backroom staff as part of the wider restructuring process. Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, who worked alongside Malinga, has also left the franchise. Fielding coach Carl Hopkinson is another prominent name to depart as Mumbai Indians prepare for the next phase of their IPL journey.

Looking back at Malinga’s legendary MI legacy
Although Malinga’s coaching stint has come to an end, his association with Mumbai Indians will remain an important part of the franchise’s history. The Sri Lankan pace legend first established himself as one of the most influential bowlers in the IPL while representing Mumbai Indians. His ability to deliver accurate yorkers, execute plans under pressure and trouble batters at the death made him a key figure in the team’s success.
Malinga was instrumental in Mumbai Indians’ four IPL title-winning campaigns as a player. He also played a vital role in the franchise’s triumph in the 2011 Champions League T20, further strengthening his reputation as one of its greatest-ever match-winners.
After stepping away from his playing career, Malinga continued his association with the team as a mentor in 2018. He returned to the coaching setup in IPL 2024, replacing Shane Bond as the franchise’s fast-bowling coach. His experience and understanding of high-pressure situations made him a valuable presence in the dugout. However, with Mumbai Indians now entering a new phase under Pollard, the franchise has opted for a different coaching structure.
