India name T20I squad for Zimbabwe tour

India have unveiled a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, with the tour set to begin on July 23 at the Harare Sports Club. The selection committee has opted for a fresh-looking group, making several changes to the squad currently involved in the T20I series against England. While Shreyas Iyer continues as captain and Tilak Varma being his deputy, the biggest talking point is the omission of Sanju Samson, who misses out despite starring in India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. All three matches of the series will be played in Harare as India look to continue building squad depth ahead of a busy international calendar.

No place for Sanju Samson, Axar Patel and other stars

The most surprising decision is undoubtedly the exclusion of Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament during India’s successful T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. The wicketkeeper-batter had played a crucial role throughout the tournament, making his omission a major talking point ahead of the Zimbabwe series.

The BCCI has not provided any explanation for Samson’s absence, leaving fans and experts speculating over the decision. He is not the only notable name to miss out, as experienced all-rounder Axar Patel has also been left out of the squad.

Several other members of the current T20I setup have also not been selected for the tour. Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna are among the players missing from the squad, although the board has not indicated whether workload management, injuries or tactical planning influenced the selections. The omissions have paved the way for a number of fresh faces and returning players, highlighting India’s continued emphasis on expanding its T20 talent pool.

Rinku Singh returns, Prabhsimran Singh among fresh additions

One of the biggest positives from the squad announcement is the return of Rinku Singh, who finds himself back in India’s T20I setup after missing recent assignments. Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh has also earned a recall after consistently impressive IPL performances over the last two seasons. Prabhsimran amassed 579 runs during the 2025 IPL before following it up with another outstanding campaign in 2026, scoring 510 runs in 14 matches at an average of 42.50 and a strike rate of 168.87. With Ishan Kishan already in the squad, Prabhsimran is expected to provide backup as the reserve wicketkeeper.

India have also rewarded domestic performers Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur with their maiden international call-ups. Both pacers enjoyed exceptional Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaigns, with Ashok claiming 22 wickets while Thakur picked up 18 wickets in only seven matches at a remarkable average of 9.88. Ashok also impressed during his debut IPL season for Gujarat Titans, where he clocked the fastest delivery of the tournament at 154.2 kph.

Fast bowler Mayank Yadav returns to the national setup after an injury-hit period, while Harsh Dubey, who made his ODI debut against Afghanistan earlier this year, has earned his maiden T20I call-up.

Young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has retained his place after impressing during recent opportunities, while Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Kishan and Varun Chakaravarthy also continue in the squad.

India will hope the blend of experienced campaigners and exciting newcomers delivers another successful overseas campaign as they take on Zimbabwe in Harare later this month.
