Spain break Australia record in international cricket

Spain have etched their name into international cricket history after surpassing Australia‘s long-standing record for consecutive international victories. The European side recorded their 21st successive win by defeating Finland on August 14, 2026, before extending the remarkable sequence to 24 victories with further wins over the Isle of Man, Luxembourg and Bulgaria at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C in Finland.

The achievement is particularly striking given Spain’s rise in the associate cricket landscape. Their extraordinary run has been built almost entirely through T20I cricket and stretches back more than three years, underlining the consistency the team has maintained across different opponents and tournaments.

Historic Australian benchmark finally surpassed

Australia’s famous streak came during one of the most dominant periods in the country’s cricket history. The Australian side won 20 consecutive international matches across formats in 2003, combining 17 successive ODIs with three Test victories against the West Indies. Ricky Ponting led Australia during the ODI portion of the run, including their successful 2003 World Cup campaign, while Steve Waugh captained the side during the Test victories.

Australia’s ODI winning sequence itself reached 21 matches, beginning against England in Hobart on January 11, 2003, and ending against the West Indies in Port of Spain on May 24. The broader combined international winning streak, however, is recorded as 20 matches.

That distinction makes Spain’s achievement especially significant in the context of the combined international record. For more than two decades, Australia’s mark remained a benchmark of sustained excellence before Spain eventually drew level and then moved beyond it.

Spain’s extraordinary rise

Spain’s winning streak began in February 2023 with a victory over the Isle of Man. The team subsequently put together a series of impressive results against European opposition, including wins over Jersey, Croatia and other associate nations. Cricket Spain had already established Spain as the record-holder for consecutive T20I victories by 2024, when the side reached 14 straight wins.

The sequence continued to grow through 2025. A 5-0 series sweep against Croatia in December saw Spain reach 20 consecutive victories, putting them level with Australia’s combined international record.

Their breakthrough came in Finland on August 14, when Spain defeated Finland to register win No. 21. Three more victories followed in quick succession, taking the streak to 24 by August 18.

Bulgaria victory underlines Spain’s dominance

The latest win against Bulgaria offered another glimpse of Spain’s ruthless form. Bulgaria were dismissed for just 59 in 14.4 overs, after which Spain raced to 61/1 in only 4.5 overs to seal a nine-wicket victory. The chase required just 29 deliveries, highlighting the gulf between the two sides on the day.

Spain’s record-breaking run is now more than a statistical curiosity. It represents the rapid development of cricket outside its traditional strongholds and gives Spain considerable momentum heading deeper into the T20 World Cup qualification pathway.
