Washington Freedom captain Steve Smith delivered a memorable performance in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024, smashing a colossal six off Los Angeles Knight Riders’ Andre Russell at Church Street Park in Morrisville on Monday (July 15).

On the final delivery of the fourth over of the Freedom innings, Smith showcased his immense power by launching a spectacular 94-meter six. The ball soared high and handsome, clearing the park effortlessly during Freedom’s run chase. Facing a back-of-a-length delivery from Russell, Smith unleashed a powerful shot over deep mid-wicket, thrilling the crowd as the ball rocketed into the stands.

Smith’s unbeaten knock and Travis Head’s crucial contribution

Smith remained unbeaten on 42 runs off 36 balls, showcasing his mastery with the bat. His composed yet aggressive innings featured two sixes and two boundaries. His clinical batting, coupled with Travis Head‘s explosive knock, ensured Freedom’s comfortable victory by eight wickets. Head played a pivotal role in the chase, scoring a blistering 54 runs off just 32 deliveries. His knock was laced with six massive sixes and two boundaries.

Los Angles Knight Riders’ struggle with bat

The Sunil Narine-led Knight Riders were bundled out for 129 in 18.4 overs, struggling to build partnerships. Saif Badar top-scored with 35 off 28 balls, while Russell (20 off 12) and Spencer Johnson (16 off 9) made useful contributions. Freedom’s bowlers excelled, with Saurabh Netravalkar taking 4/35 and Glenn Maxwell and Lockie Ferguson claiming three and two wickets respectively, stifling Knight Riders’ batting lineup.

MLC 2024 points table position

With this victory, Freedom solidified their top position in the MLC 2024 points table. The Smith-led side boasts three wins from four games, along with a no-result against Texas Super Kings. In contrast, the Knight Riders are struggling, positioned fifth in the six-team tournament with only one win from their first five games.
