Yuzvendra Chahal has brought the curtain down on his first-class cricket career, but the veteran India leg-spinner has made it clear that his journey in international cricket is not over yet. The 36-year-old has decided to step away from red-ball cricket with his focus now firmly on earning another opportunity in the ODI and T20I formats.
Chahal made the announcement on October 2, bringing an end to a 17-year first-class career. Although the Haryana spinner never managed to play a Test for India, he leaves the format with an impressive domestic record and plenty of experience gathered across India and county cricket.
Yuzvendra Chahal ends his first-class career
Chahal’s first-class journey began with Haryana in 2009. Across 49 matches, he claimed 148 wickets at an average of 32.27, with his best figures of 6/25. His numbers underline the impact he had whenever he featured in the longer format.
“I played my last First-Class match at Lord’s, saying these words is emotional as a Test cap was always a dream, one that I carried with me for many years. It may not have happened, but I am genuinely content with the journey I have had and incredibly grateful for every opportunity that came my way in this format,” Chahal wrote in his Instagram post.
His final first-class appearance came for Northamptonshire at Lord’s, bringing an emotional conclusion to a career that never delivered the Test cap he had hoped for.
For Chahal, red-ball cricket was about much more than statistics. In his farewell message, he reflected on the lessons he gained from spending long periods on the field, particularly patience, resilience and the ability to fight through difficult phases.
“For me, red-ball cricket was never just another format,” he added. “It was where I learned the meaning of patience, character, resilience and the pure joy of being out there for hours, fighting for every run and every wicket.”
The Test dream ultimately remained unfulfilled, but Chahal’s first-class career still gave him a strong foundation as a professional cricketer.
Chahal keeps India comeback dream alive
The biggest takeaway from Chahal’s announcement is that retirement from first-class cricket does not mean retirement from cricket altogether.
The leg-spinner wants to concentrate on limited-overs cricket and remains determined to put himself back in contention for India. He has already represented India extensively in both white-ball formats, featuring in 72 ODIs and 80 T20Is.
Chahal has not played an international match since August 2023, making a national-team comeback a challenging road. However, he continues to remain active in the franchise circuit and is still regarded as one of India’s most experienced white-ball spinners.
His decision to leave first-class cricket allows him to devote greater attention to the formats in which he believes he can still contribute at the highest level.

“I am not done yet”: Chahal
Chahal’s announcement carried a clear message about his ambitions. He stated that his desire to represent India remains strong and that he believes he still has enough cricket left to compete for another international opportunity.
“I am not done yet. The hunger to play for my country is still very much alive. I believe I have the cricket left in me, and I will give everything I have to earn another opportunity in the One-Day and T20 formats.
“A special thank you to the Haryana Cricket Association, Mr. Ranbir Singh Mahindra Sir and Mr. Anirudh Singh Chaudhary Sir for their continuous support, trust and belief throughout my journey.
“From a 10-year-old holding his first red ball to playing his final First-Class game, it has been one hell of a journey,” Chahal concluded.
That determination will now shape the next chapter of his career. Rather than chasing a Test opportunity that never arrived, Chahal has chosen to concentrate on the white-ball game that has brought him some of his biggest successes.
His career has already included memorable performances for India, particularly in T20 cricket, while his IPL record has established him as one of the competition’s most successful wicket-takers.
