Alfie Gilchrist has been praised by Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino after the young defender was selected in the starting lineup for Saturday’s (January 6) match against Preston North End.
In the FA Cup third round, Preston will visit Stamford Bridge to play the Blues. Raheem Sterling, Cole Palmer, as well as Enzo Fernandez were among the players in Pochettino’s strong side for the match.
In addition, Gilchrist, 20, received his first Chelsea start as a result of his outstanding performances with the U23s. This season, the English centre defender has already made two appearances as a substitute for the senior side.
Pochettino was pleased to see Gilchrist make his complete debut in the match versus the EFL Championship team. Prior to the game, he stated (via Metro), “Alfie is a player that has been helping us in the last few games. He’s made a big impact from the bench and today he has the possibility to play from the start in front of our home fans.”
Gilchrist came from the bench during the 90+2nd minute to make his league debut in a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. In the next game, which his team won 3-2 at Kenilworth Road, he also made a crucial tackle that stopped Luton Town.
“I’m expecting big things from Alfie” : John Terry
Gilchrist replaced Thiago Silva after 61 minutes of action against Preston. He made one tackle, one clearance, and two interceptions in his first game at right back.
John Terry anticipated that this season at Stamford Bridge, Gilchrist would be promoted to Pochettino’s starting squad. According to OneFootball, the Chelsea veteran had nothing but love for the Blues defender.
The former Chelsea centre-back said, “Alfie Gilchrist is a really, really good player. He’s got an unbelievable attitude, he’s been at the club since the age of eight. He performs so well on a daily basis and does everything right. I’m expecting big things from Alfie. I expect to see him play a game or two this season, we’ll have to see how the season goes on.”
