Bhaichung Bhutia felt good about India’s chances in the Asian Cup 2024 game against Australia. The former Indian player felt that he would not be surprised if India were to win the game. Bhaichung felt that Australia are no longer the side they were a decade ago and added that even India has improved a lot over the years.
“You never know. I will not be surprised if India gets a good result tomorrow, I mean we have the team to surprise them. You know, Australia is not the Australia of a decade ago. We also have made progress as a team,” said Bhaichung. He further added that India would face a tough challenge but felt that beating Australia is not an impossible task.
“Yes, it will be a tough match, but it is not an impossible task (to get a good result) for this side against them,” added Bhaichung in his statement. He felt that the absence of some players in the midfield might hurt India. India will be without the services of some of its experienced players. The former Indian skipper felt that the absence of Kuruniyan is a setback for India. Bhutia praised the speed and skill sets of the youngster.
“Yes, it may be a bit of a concern because these are experienced players. I think the absence of Kuruniyan will especially hurt India. He is a strong and versatile player, who has speed and skill,” added Bhutia. He was optimistic about other players in the side. While he felt that Ashique would be a bug miss, he expected others to step up.
“He is a constant threat to the opposition. But that said we have other good players who can make an impact,” Bhutia concluded. As it turned out, India lost 0-2 to Australia. Till the first half, India managed to hold the world no.25 side. But in the second half, Australia attacked and overcame India. Lack of attack cost India the game.
