On Saturday, Australia made some notable changes for the remainder of the white-ball series against West Indies.

Explosive batter rested for remaining ODI and T20 fixtures against West Indies

The decision was made amidst concerns regarding Head’s recent form in international cricket, particularly after he registered a two golden ducks in a final Test match and managed only 4 runs in the first ODI against the West Indies. The move to release Head from the series is viewed as a strategic decision to provide him with a break and a chance for refreshment ahead of the crucial upcoming tour to New Zealand.

Since the ODI World Cup 2023 Final, Head has faced challenges in making a significant impact, having scored just one century in the first Test against the West Indies. In the nine matches he played since the World Cup Final, Head struggled to deliver the desired contributions in the Australian lineup.

Australia have not named any replacements for Head in the squad. However, the emerging domestic talent, Jake Fraser-McGurk, is anticipated to make his debut in the series. At 21 years old, Fraser-McGurk has earned a reputation for playing rapid innings, offering a potential boost to the Australian team.

Further notable changes and new inclusion in Australian squad

In addition to Head’s release, Australia announced two more changes to their team. Josh Hazlewood has been included in the squad for the second ODI against the West Indies at the SCG. Meanwhile, paceman Xavier Bartlett, who impressed on his international debut, will be rested from the second match. Spencer Johnson will join the squad as cover for the third ODI in Canberra, although Bartlett is expected to be available. Australia are leading the ongoing three-match ODI series 3-0.
