Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli and Ricky Ponting

With the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 between India and Australia just days away, a verbal skirmish has already ignited between India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and former Australian captain Ricky Ponting.

Gambhir took issue with Ponting’s recent comments on Indian stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, suggesting that Ponting should focus on his own team. Ponting, in response, expresses his surprise at the Indian coach’s sharp response.

Ricky Ponting’s initial concerns about Virat Kohli’s form

Ponting first made headlines with his observations, while speaking to ICC, regarding Kohli’s recent form, particularly his drop in century count over the last five years. Ponting remarked, expressing genuine surprise at the statistic. He further noted that few international top-order batters could retain their spots with a similar record.

“I saw a stat the other day about Virat. It said he’s only scored two Test hundreds in the last five years. That didn’t seem right to me, but if that is accurate, then that’s a concern. There probably wouldn’t be anyone else still playing international cricket as a top-order batsman who’s only scored two Test match hundreds in five years,” Ponting said.

Gautam Gambhir’s sharp rebuttal

In response to Ponting’s initial critique, Gambhir made it clear that Ponting’s comments were unwelcome. When informed of Ponting’s statements by reporters, He expressed unwavering faith in Kohli and Rohit, describing them as “incredibly tough men” who have accomplished much for Indian cricket and will continue to do so.

“What does Ponting have to do with Indian cricket?”. He should think about Australian cricket. I don’t have any concerns. They (Kohli and Rohit) are incredibly tough men; they’ve achieved a lot for Indian cricket and are going to achieve a lot in future as well,” Gambhir responded.

Ponting’s clarification and praise for Kohli’s abilities

Ponting acknowledged that Kohli’s record over the past five years -only two Test centuries -would generally be concerning for a top-order batter. Speaking on 7News Ponting noted that, in his view, Kohli might be reflecting on his recent performance himself. Although Ponting suggested that Kohli’s recent output is unusual for a player of his caliber, he reiterated his respect for Kohli’s past success in Australia and seemed taken aback by Gambhir’s defensive stance.

“I think if you ask Virat, I’m sure Virat would be a little bit concerned that he hasn’t been able to make the same amount of hundreds as he has in previous years. In no way was it a dig at him. I actually followed it up by saying he’s played well in Australia and he’ll be keen to bounce back over here. So, it’s amazing how little things can get cut up, but he’s a class player and he’s played well in Australia in the past,” Ponting retaliated.

Ponting’s final thoughts on Gambhir

Reflecting on the unexpected public exchange, Ponting reiterated his willingness to let the matter rest and move forward amicably. “I was surprised to read the reaction but knowing the coach, Gautam Gambhir … he’s quite a prickly character, so I’m not surprised it was him who said something back,” Ponting concluded with a touch of humor, hinting that he doesn’t mind the exchange. Ponting concluded by noting his openness to a handshake with Gambhir when they meet during the series, though he humorously expressed doubts on whether it would actually happen.

Meanwhile, Kohli’s formidable record in Australia – 1,352 runs at an average of 54.08 in 13 matches – backs Ponting’s confidence in the Indian star, suggesting that the upcoming series could indeed be a turning point for Kohli.
