The top matchups between batters and bowlers often define some moments in the ODI aka 50 overs format. Ahead of the much-awaited Champions Trophy 2025 final, one such interesting contest to witness is between India’s ace batter Virat Kohli and New Zealand’s left-arm spinner and all rounder, Mitchell Santner. With different styles and perspectives towards the game, their on-field clash have been fascinating to watch over the years.

Quite interestingly, Virat Kohli’s record against Mitchell Santner in ODIs has been impressive irrespective of his past struggles against the left-arm spin bowlers.

Virat Kohli has faced 259 deliveries from Santner in ODIs, scoring 180 runs at an average of 60.00 and a strike rate of 69.49.

While Kohli’s average suggests that he has been relatively persistent in playing against Mitchell Santner, his strike rate indicates a cautious and relevant outlook against the left-arm spinner. Kohli has been dismissed three times by Santner, which suggests that the New Zealand spinner has been able to trouble him on multiple occasions.

Known for his capability to play and dominate spin conditions, Kohli can use his excellent footwork and precise shot selection. Nevertheless, Santner’s variations, ability and accuracy to extract turn have kept Kohli in check. The stats and data show that while Kohli has made a solid average, his scoring rate is lower than his usual ODI standards, indicating that Santner has managed to slow him down effectively.

Santner’s positives and strengths lies in his capability to contain batters and confuse batters with their shots. His ability to extract turn and maintain a tight line and length has prevented Kohli from scoring freely. The left-arm spinner often bowls wider to Virat, making him to reach for deliveries outside off-stump, which has led to dismissals in the past.

While Kohli has scored runs against Santner without major struggles, the Kiwi spinner has successfully restricted his scoring rate. This suggests that their battle is more about patience and strategy rather than outright domination by either player.

As India and New Zealand is set to face off in final clash in ICC Champions Trophy 2025, this duel remains a key contest to watch, with high anticipation around.
