India are in the final phase of their preparations for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with the opening encounter scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle. Before the World Test Championship contest gets underway, the visitors are taking part in a three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI to fine-tune their combinations and assess match readiness.
The practice fixture has already presented a few talking points. Regular captain Shubman Gill missed the opening day after suffering an injury to his right ring finger during a training session, prompting vice-captain KL Rahul to lead the side. Although the match was initially planned as a four-day affair, the Indian team management reduced it to three days to better manage player workloads before the Test series. While several players are aiming to impress, attention has also shifted to the selection battle, particularly among India’s spin options.
Aakash Chopra explains why Saransh Jain is unlikely to make his Test debut
Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes newly selected spinner Saransh Jain could find it difficult to make his Test debut despite earning his maiden call-up to the national side. According to Chopra, India’s strong spin department and Sri Lanka’s expected batting combination leave little room for another specialist spinner in the playing XI.
Sharing his assessment before the series, Chopra suggested that the team is unlikely to require a fourth spin option, especially if Sri Lanka field only one left-handed batter in their top order.
“I feel Saransh will not play. Sri Lanka’s team is not announced, but there are chances there will be only one left-hander. You already have four spinners, and he is the fourth. I think Saransh will not get a chance. This has happened before as well. It was unfair on Abhimanyu Easwaran also, as he did not get enough chances,” Chopra said, as quoted by Zee.
Saransh, who has impressed consistently in domestic cricket for Madhya Pradesh with both bat and ball, received his first Test call-up after strong performances in the longer format. However, breaking into India’s playing XI appears to be a difficult challenge given the experience already available in the squad.
Ravindra Jadeja is expected to spearhead India’s spin attack, while Kuldeep Yadav remains a strong contender for a place in the side. Manav Suthar, who enjoyed a memorable Test debut against Afghanistan by claiming seven wickets, is also believed to be ahead of Saransh in the selection race. With multiple proven options available, the newcomer may have to wait patiently for his opportunity.
