Delhi have handed Aaryavir Sehwag his first major leadership responsibility after naming the 18-year-old as captain of their Under-19 squad for the upcoming Vinoo Mankad Trophy. The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) announced a 16-member squad on Saturday, with the tournament scheduled to begin in Visakhapatnam on October 8.
The appointment comes at an important stage in Aaryavir’s developing career. The son of former India opener Virender Sehwag, the young batter recently represented India Under-19 in a three-match Youth ODI series against Australia in Rajkot, gaining valuable experience at the international age-group level.
Aaryavir Sehwag gets first major captaincy assignment
Aaryavir’s promotion to the Delhi Under-19 captaincy follows an encouraging outing against Australia. He featured in all three matches of the Youth ODI series and finished with 109 runs, showing glimpses of his ability at the top of the order. He began the series with 28 off 26 balls in a rain-shortened opening game, helping India secure a seven-run victory. In the second ODI, Aaryavir produced his highest score of the series, making a composed 47.
The right-handed batter was involved in useful partnerships before his innings ended through a run-out, leaving him three runs short of a half-century. He then scored 34 in the third match, giving him three starts across the series. The performances have now been followed by an opportunity to lead his state at the domestic level.
From Delhi Premier League to India U19 cricket
Aaryavir’s recent rise has included opportunities beyond age-group cricket. Earlier this year, he played two matches for West Delhi Lions in the 2026 Delhi Premier League, although he managed only 24 runs. His record at the junior level, however, includes a standout performance. In the 2024 Cooch Behar Trophy, Aaryavir struck a remarkable 297 for Delhi against Meghalaya, underlining his potential as a long-format batter.
His time with India Under-19 also gave him an opportunity to reflect on converting starts into substantial scores. Following the Australia series, Aaryavir acknowledged that he had not been able to turn his promising beginnings into big innings.
He also spoke about learning to construct longer knocks by approaching an innings in different phases, an aspect that could become particularly important as he takes on greater responsibility with Delhi.

Arnav Bugga named vice-captain
Aaryavir will be supported by Arnav Bugga, who has been appointed vice-captain of the 16-member Delhi squad. The team features a mix of batters, wicketkeepers and bowling options as Delhi prepare for their Vinoo Mankad Trophy campaign. The squad includes Tanmay Chaudhary, Uday Chawla, Kirit Kaushik, Shantanu Yadav and others.
For Aaryavir, the tournament represents another significant step in his development. After recently experiencing India Under-19 cricket, he will now have the added responsibility of guiding Delhi while looking to make a strong impact with the bat.
The Vinoo Mankad Trophy begins in Visakhapatnam on October 8, giving the young captain his first major opportunity to combine individual performances with leadership duties.
