Ahead of India Tests, England eye New Zealand legend for fast-bowling consultant role

As England gears up for a high-stakes home Test series against India this summer, the team is reportedly considering the appointment of New Zealand fast-bowling legend Tim Southee as their new fast-bowling consultant. The potential move signals England’s intent to strengthen their coaching setup with experienced international expertise ahead of a demanding cricketing calendar.

Former England pacer James Anderson unavailable for fast-bowling consultant role

According to reports from the BBC and the New Zealand Herald, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is evaluating Southee, 36, for the consultant role vacated by James Anderson. Anderson, who retired from international cricket last year and briefly served in the position, is unavailable this season due to county cricket commitments with Lancashire.

New Zealand legend to boost up the England camp

Southee retired from international cricket in December 2024 as New Zealand’s all-time leading wicket-taker across formats. With 391 Test wickets to his name—second only to the legendary Sir Richard Hadlee for the Black Caps—Southee’s pedigree as a world-class seamer is undisputed.

If appointed, Southee would become the third New Zealander on England’s coaching staff, joining head coach Brendon McCullum and spin coach Jeetan Patel. Southee shares a close personal and professional bond with McCullum, having played together for New Zealand over a decade. McCullum even paid tribute to Southee on the field following his final Test appearance in Hamilton, underscoring their mutual respect.

England’s fast-bowling stocks are currently stretched thin due to injuries to senior pacers like Chris Woakes and Mark Wood. With a five-Test series against India followed by the Ashes tour of Australia, the ECB is keen to ensure its young and developing seamers receive top-tier mentorship. Prospects such as Gus Atkinson, Sam Cook, Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts are expected to feature prominently in the five-match Test series against India, and the presence of a seasoned campaigner like Southee in the camp could prove vital to their development.
