Amol Muzumdar has addressed India’s decision not to accept the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 trophy from Asian Cricket Council chief Mohsin Naqvi after Harmanpreet Kaur’s side defeated Sri Lanka in the final. The Indian women’s team secured a record-extending eighth Asia Cup title with a comprehensive 72-run victory in the final on Sunday.
India did not take part in the traditional trophy presentation after Naqvi, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board and Pakistan’s Interior Minister, was set to present the trophy. The decision became one of the major talking points after India’s title-winning campaign.
Amol Muzumdar says India stand by BCCI’s decision
Speaking after the final, Muzumdar made it clear that the Indian team was united with the BCCI over the decision. He said the team considered the tournament complete after being crowned champions. The India head coach was also asked whether the team could receive the trophy at a later stage. However, he said he had no information about any such possibility.
“That stand has been taken by BCCI and we stand by it. For us, this tournament is over. We’re the champions, that’s good enough. It was on the big board that India champions of Asia Cup 2026. No news as yet. So, I cannot answer that,” Muzumdar said.
Muzumdar was further questioned about whether such situations should be kept away from sport. He once again reiterated that the BCCI had taken the position and the Indian team remained united behind it.
India turn attention towards Asian Games
The decision mirrored the stance taken by the Indian men’s team after winning the 2025 Asia Cup, when Suryakumar Yadav’s side also declined to receive the trophy from Naqvi. The latest episode has therefore brought back memories of the previous year’s trophy presentation controversy. For Muzumdar, however, the focus remained on what India had achieved on the field. He praised the players and support staff after their dominant campaign and stressed that the team was proud of becoming Asian champions.
“For us, this tournament is officially over. The fact that we’re champions, we’re really glad and I’m really proud of every single person in this unit, including the support staff and the players, needless to say,” he concluded.
India will now shift their attention to the Asian Games, which begin in Japan on September 19. Both the Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams will enter the competition as defending champions.
