BCCI responds to claims regarding a potential restart of bilateral series with Bangladesh

The landscape of international cricket is shifting rapidly, and few matchups generate as much anticipation, and political scrutiny, as those involving the Indian cricket team. Following recent political changes in Dhaka, speculation has been rife regarding the resumption of bilateral cricketing ties between India and Bangladesh. Simultaneously, fans and experts are eager for a glimpse into India’s long-term planning for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, particularly concerning the future of veteran icons Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. In an exclusive conversation, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia addressed these burning questions, providing crucial clarity on the board’s strategic and diplomatic roadmap.

BCCI clarifies its position on the possibility of resuming bilateral ties with Bangladesh

The cricketing ties between India and Bangladesh were paused last year when the Indian team’s scheduled white-ball tour was postponed due to widespread civil unrest in the neighbouring nation. Now that Bangladesh have transitioned to an elected government and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is led by its new president, former captain Tamim Iqbal, whispers of a bilateral restart have intensified. Iqbal has publicly expressed a keen interest in bringing India back to the diplomatic crease.

However, Saikia firmly established that the BCCI will not make independent political assessments. The board’s stance remains explicitly tethered to New Delhi’s foreign policy.

The BCCI is a cricketing controlling board, and we have nothing to do with what is going on politically in other countries, whatever regulations and policies the central government frames, we follow them, just like any other sports federation,” Saikia stated to PTI. He emphasized that the board operates strictly within the boundaries set by the central government.

Saikia further clarified that the internal governance structure of a neighbouring nation does not dictate the BCCI’s scheduling decisions. Whether a government is democratically elected or otherwise is secondary to official state clearance. For cricket fans hoping for a bilateral series, the message is clear: the matches will only proceed once the Government of India gives the definitive green light, ensuring that sporting schedules align seamlessly with national security and diplomatic protocols.

Strategic roadmap for 2027 World Cup remains strictly behind closed doors

Beyond cross-border diplomacy, the internal transition of the Indian team is a massive talking point. The roadmap for the 2027 World Cup has kept the cricket fraternity divided, primarily around whether legendary white-ball icons Rohit and Kohli feature in the ultimate blueprint. While both veterans have expressed their desire to play in the mega-event, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have remained notably non-committal.

When pressed on whether the BCCI has initiated formal discussions regarding the transition, Saikia resolutely shut down public speculation, asserting that boardroom strategies are “not meant for public consumption.”

According to the BCCI Secretary, the planning process is continuous and highly collaborative, involving the cricket committee, selectors, support staff, and the players themselves. Because communication channels remain constantly open, Saikia noted that there is no need for emergency or special sessions to decide the future of senior players. While the public eagerly awaits definitive answers on the squad’s evolution, the BCCI is prioritizing boardroom confidentiality to allow the team to build its 2027 campaign away from media pressure.
