WTC winner joins Sydney Thunder for BBL|16

The Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27 season will see Sydney Thunder looking to strengthen their squad as they aim to improve on their recent performances. With a new head coach at the helm and an experienced bowling attack taking shape, the franchise has begun preparing for the upcoming campaign. The team will open its season against Adelaide Strikers in Canberra on December 16, with the management hoping that its latest additions can help deliver a stronger tournament. Ahead of the start of the upcoming edition, Thunder have signed a key pace bowler for the entire season to further bolster the bowling attack.

WTC winner signs one-year deal with Sydney Thunder

The key star in discussion is none other than New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult,  who has signed a one-year contract with Sydney Thunder for the entire BBL|16 season, including the finals. The experienced left-arm pacer, who was part of New Zealand’s World Test Championship win, will return to Australia’s premier domestic T20 competition after previously featuring in the tournament for Melbourne Stars during the 2022-23 season.

Boult’s arrival adds international experience to Thunder’s pace department, where he will join fellow New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson. The two quicks could form an important part of the team’s bowling plans as Thunder look to challenge for the title.

Speaking about his return to the competition, Boult expressed excitement about representing the franchise and playing alongside Ferguson.

“I’m really excited to be playing in the Big Bash again and joining Lockie at Thunder. The way he gets involved is what I’m hoping to mirror and make a mark like he has – not just with the team but [with] the fans as well,” Boult said in an official statement.

The pacer’s previous BBL experience came with Melbourne Stars, making his upcoming campaign only his second season in the competition.

SA20 commitment could create a scheduling clash

Although Boult is committed to Thunder throughout BBL|16, his participation could create a scheduling challenge because of his involvement in South Africa’s SA20 competition. The BBL is scheduled to conclude on January 26, while the SA20 begins on January 17. Boult is expected to represent MI Cape Town (MICT) again, with the franchise scheduled to begin its campaign on January 20.

This overlap could become particularly complicated if Sydney Thunder qualify for the BBL finals. In that scenario, Boult would have to manage commitments in two tournaments taking place in different countries. The only possible way for him to avoid the clash, according to the available schedule, would be for Thunder to miss the finals and complete their league-stage campaign on January 17 in Brisbane. He could then travel to South Africa in time for MICT’s opening fixture.

Before joining Thunder, Boult featured in the inaugural edition of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL). He finished as the second-highest wicket-taker for champions Edinburgh Castle Rockers, claiming 16 wickets at an economy rate of 6.63. His campaign included career-best bowling figures of 5 for 24 against Glasgow Cosmic.

Andrew Flintoff’s appointment adds to Thunder’s new direction

Thunder have also made a significant change to their coaching setup ahead of the new season. Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff was appointed head coach in June, replacing Trevor Bayliss after the franchise finished last in the 2023-24 and 2025-26 seasons. Boult welcomed the opportunity to work with Flintoff, revealing that the former England international was among the cricketers he admired growing up.

“Every cricketer idolised Freddie (Flintoff) as a kid (and) I was one of them. I’m sure he wants to bring the group together, create a great culture, and work towards something special,” Boult said, as quoted by cricket.com.au.

With Flintoff leading the coaching staff and Boult strengthening the pace attack, Sydney Thunder will hope to build a more competitive team for BBL|16. Their campaign begins against Adelaide Strikers on December 16 in Canberra.
