The ODI success has been particularly significant, as England have now won all three of their 50-over series in 2026. It represents a strong response after the difficult period that followed their disappointing 2023 ODI World Cup campaign.
The changes around the team have also extended beyond the coaching group. Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has joined the white-ball setup as a specialist mentor, with his experience expected to add another dimension to McCullum and Brook’s plans as England look to push towards the top of the international rankings.

McCullum admitted that he had initially been comfortable handling both Test and white-ball coaching responsibilities. However, changes within the England setup have altered his focus, with the former batter now concentrating entirely on the white-ball side. The shift has given McCullum a clear opportunity to concentrate on England’s limited-overs cricket and build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level.
“At the time, I was very comfortable doing it all [Test and white-ball coach]. Change happens and I my focus now is on how to make this side the best white-ball team in the world,” said McCullum as quoted by SkySports.
McCullum was candid about England’s current position, admitting that the team has not yet reached the standard he ultimately wants. For McCullum, the process involves building a team that can maintain intensity while also possessing the physical and mental qualities required to perform consistently across demanding international schedules.
The former New Zealand star also outlined the characteristics he wants to see from his England team. McCullum wants his players to embrace an aggressive and energetic style, with intensity forming a key part of the side’s identity.
“We’re not there yet. We’ve got a lot of growth within us and a lot of improvement to make. But I want us to become the strongest, fastest and most robust cricket teams in the world, one that can play at a high-octane speed,” added McCullum.
