Dasun Shanaka stars with a blistering innings as Seattle Orcas crush Los Angeles Knight Riders in MLC 2026

The 14th match of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 witnessed a thrilling Western Derby as the Seattle Orcas locked horns with the Los Angeles Knight Riders at the Oakland Coliseum on June 28, 2026. In a high-stakes night encounter, it was the Seattle Orcas who emerged victorious, executing a clinical defense of their total to stifle the Knight Riders’ star-studded lineup. The match shifted gears dramatically in the final overs of the first innings, setting up a targeted chase that proved just out of reach for Los Angeles, ultimately solidifying Seattle’s standing in the tournament.

Dasun Shanaka’s explosive knock powers Seattle Orcas to a commanding score

Opting to bat first, the Seattle Orcas found themselves in a precarious position early on. The Los Angeles bowling unit, led by a clinical Sunil Narine (2 for 17) and Fabian Allen (2 for 18), ripped through Seattle’s top order. Shayan Jahangir fell for 5, Matthew Breetzke went for 2, and the dangerous Shimron Hetmyer was dismissed for just 16. When skipper Marcus Stoinis departed for 10, leaving the Orcas reeling at 72 for 6 in the 14th over, a sub-100 total looked entirely possible. Young Ali Sheikh provided some resistance with a gritty 38 off 29 balls, including four boundaries and a six, but Seattle needed a miracle to post a competitive total.

Enter Dasun Shanaka. The Sri Lankan all-rounder turned the match completely on its head with a breathtaking, counter-attacking masterclass. Shanaka bludgeoned an unbeaten 58 runs off just 23 deliveries, striking at an astonishing 252.17. His explosive innings was decorated with 3 fours and 5 massive sixes, single-handedly breathing life into the Orcas’ dugout. Alongside Harmeet Singh (19), Shanaka weaponized the death overs, targeting the pace of Ali Khan, who leaked 50 runs in his four overs. Shanaka brought up his half-century in just 21 balls, driving Seattle to a fighting total of 154 for 7 at the end of their 20 overs.

Chasing 155 for victory, the Los Angeles Knight Riders started their innings with intent during the Powerplay. Openers Colin Munro and Andre Fletcher put together a promising platform. Fletcher looked dangerous, scoring a quickfire 23 off 13 balls with two fours and two sixes, before falling to Jasdeep Singh in the final over of the Powerplay. Unmukt Chand‘s duck in the very next over shifted the momentum back to Seattle, leaving the Knight Riders at 43 for 2.

Munro anchored one end with a steady 33 off 36 balls, but the Seattle spin choke took full effect. Harmeet Singh was exceptional through the middle overs, finishing with figures of 2 for 20, including the crucial wickets of Munro and Saif Badar. As the required run rate climbed, the Knight Riders’ middle order collapsed under the pressure. Big-hitters Rovman Powell (17) and Narine (5) failed to break the shackles.

Stoinis then produced a brilliant spell at the death to seal the game for Seattle. Stoinis ran through the lower order, dismissing Narine, skipper Jason Holder (21), and Matthew Tromp (17) to finish with clinical figures of 3 for 28. Los Angeles was restricted to 134 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs, handing the Seattle Orcas a crucial 20-run victory. Unsurprisingly, Shanaka was named Player of the Match for his game-changing half-century, which proved to be the ultimate difference-maker in Oakland.
