Dinesh Karthik picks captain of Mumbai Indians for IPL 2027

Mumbai Indians (MI) camp is no stranger to high-stakes drama, but the latest whirlwind of trade rumors has sent the IPL cricket world into overdrive. Speculation is mounting that current skipper Hardik Pandya could be on his way out via a high-profile trade ahead of the IPL 2027 season.

While nothing is official as of yet, the mere possibility of Hardik’s departure has left a massive question mark over who will lead the five-time champions next. While the franchise has given no official confirmation regarding a captaincy change, former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has already thrown his weight behind a blockbuster choice.

Hardik Pandya’s future at Mumbai Indians under the spotlight

Hardik’s appointment as Mumbai Indians captain ahead of the IPL 2024 season marked the end of Rohit Sharma‘s successful leadership tenure. The decision generated considerable debate among supporters, particularly because Rohit had guided the franchise to five IPL titles.

Since the leadership transition, the Mumbai Indians captaincy has remained a major talking point among fans and cricket experts. Reports and speculation about a possible trade involving Hardik have now added another layer of uncertainty to the franchise’s plans for the upcoming season.

However, Mumbai Indians have not officially confirmed Hardik’s departure or announced any decision to change their captain. Until the franchise makes an announcement, the possibility of a leadership reshuffle remains speculative. If Hardik does leave, MI would need to identify a captain capable of managing the expectations associated with one of the IPL’s most successful teams.

Dinesh Karthik reveals his captaincy candidate for Mumbai Indians

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik backed Rohit as the most suitable candidate to lead Mumbai Indians if the franchise decides to appoint a new captain. Karthik highlighted Rohit’s exceptional record and argued that the franchise would have little reason to overlook his leadership abilities if his services were available.

“I think they are looking for a new captain. It’s just a matter of time before they announce it. And why not Rohit Sharma? He has been the most successful captain. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that along with MS Dhoni, he has been the most successful captain. So, if they go back to him, there is no harm in it,” Karthik said.

Karthik further emphasised that Rohit remains an accomplished leader whose experience could prove valuable in a high-pressure environment.

“He is one of the finest captains. When his services are available, why not use them? If it means he has to be the captain, I think he has that capability. He is a very good captain,” Karthik added.

Notably, Rohit’s previous success makes him an obvious candidate in any discussion about Mumbai Indians’ leadership. Under his captaincy, the franchise won five IPL titles, establishing itself as one of the competition’s dominant teams. His familiarity with the dressing room, understanding of the franchise’s culture and experience in handling pressure could make a return appealing if MI require a new leader.
