Ben Stokes fumes at umpire regarding DRS timer limit in Edgbaston Test

The second Test of the five-match series between England and India took an intense turn on Day 3 at Edgbaston, Birmingham, when a late DRS appeal from Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal sparked a heated on-field altercation between England skipper Ben Stokes and umpire Sharfuddoula. The incident created ripples across the cricketing world, becoming a major talking point in what was otherwise a competitive contest.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s late signal prompts Ben Stokes’ animated reaction

In the early phase of India’s second innings, Jaiswal was given out leg-before by umpire Sharfuddoula off a delivery from pacer Josh Tongue. With 28 runs to his name from just 22 deliveries, Jaiswal appeared unsure of the call and discussed the matter with his partner KL Rahul. However, the review signal came just as the 15-second timer on the stadium screen lapsed.

Stokes immediately raised objections, arguing that the review was initiated too late and should not have been entertained. He confronted on-field umpire, pointing towards the countdown clock that had hit zero by the time Jaiswal made the review signal. His animated gestures and sharp words reflected his belief that the protocol had been breached.

Edgbaston crowd reacts with boos to the decision

Despite England’s protest, the third umpire allowed the DRS review. But the technology offered no reprieve to Jaiswal—ball-tracking showed the ball crashing into leg stump, confirming the on-field decision. Jaiswal had to depart, and India lost a review, yet the manner in which the review was accepted despite the delayed signal led to widespread debate.

The Edgbaston crowd expressed their discontent, booing the decision to proceed with the review. Stokes, meanwhile, continued to shake his head in disbelief, underscoring his dissatisfaction with what he perceived as a lapse in umpiring standards.
