India captain Shreyas Iyer has addressed the growing excitement surrounding teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi ahead of the first T20I against England, admitting that the buzz around the youngster has become impossible to ignore. While stopping short of confirming whether the 15-year-old will make his international debut in the series opener at Chester-le-Street, Iyer praised Suryavanshi’s immense talent and assured that the youngster will make an impact whenever he gets his chance.
Shreyas Iyer responds to the growing Vaibhav Suryavanshi buzz
With India coming into the England series after a disappointing T20I series defeat to Ireland, calls for Suryavanshi’s inclusion have intensified. The teenager has generated massive excitement among fans, making his possible debut one of the biggest talking points ahead of Wednesday’s opening encounter.
During the pre-match press conference, a reporter highlighted how conversations around the youngster had dominated discussions, saying, “Bahut difficult hai coach and captain ke liye, ye jo Vaibhav, Vaibhav har jagah chal raha hai (It must be very difficult for the coach and captain because Vaibhav is being talked about everywhere).”
Iyer, however, insisted that he was not paying attention to the outside noise. The India captain made it clear that his focus remains entirely on preparing the team rather than engaging with speculation surrounding selection.
“I am not seeing any such thing. Really, I don’t know. Neither do I follow news, nor do I follow what is going on in social media, Instagram. I have not heard anything,” Iyer replied.
India keep playing XI a secret ahead of series opener
Despite repeated questions, Iyer declined to confirm whether Suryavanshi would make his senior international debut against England. The skipper said India’s team management had already discussed its plans internally and would not reveal its playing combination before the match.
“You never know what is going to happen. Our hands are tied right now in terms of what we will do. This is private. It’s something we discuss within the team. We can’t reveal our combination to the opponents,” he said.
Iyer backs every player while praising teenage sensation While refusing to disclose the playing XI, Iyer stressed that team selection is based on rewarding performances across the entire squad rather than focusing on a single player.
“Everyone on the team has performed. It’s not just one person. We need to build confidence and provide chances for each player so that everyone feels good going into the tournaments. The players who helped India win the T20 World Cup understand the format; they have been essential. So, it’s important to support them,” the Chembur-born cricketer explained.
Even though Suryavanshi’s debut remains uncertain, Iyer had no doubts about the youngster’s potential and expressed complete faith in his ability. The remarks underline India’s measured approach towards one of the country’s brightest young cricketers. Rather than rushing the teenager into international cricket because of public demand, the management appears keen to introduce him when the team combination allows.
“Definitely, he is a brilliant talent. When he gets a chance to play, he will certainly excel,” Iyer added.
