Yashasvi Jaiswal on Shubman Gill

India’s selection for the second Test against England at Edgbaston has come under scrutiny, with several experts and fans questioning some of the choices made by the team management. The decision to rest pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah despite the conditions suiting seam bowling raised quite a few eyebrows. Additionally, Kuldeep Yadav — the only specialist spinner in the squad — was once again left out of the playing XI, triggering a fresh round of criticism, especially considering the variety he brings to the attack. These decisions have sparked debates over balance, strategy, and intent, with many demanding greater clarity in selection calls going forward.

Yashasvi Jaiswal defends Shubman Gill’s inclusion in playing XI

Amidst growing chatter over some of India’s team selections for the second Test, Yashasvi Jaiswal came out in full support of captain Shubman Gill, praising his clarity and batting brilliance. Questions had been raised over a few decisions made by Gill and the team management — notably resting Bumrah and excluding Kuldeep — but Jaiswal emphasized that the leadership group was confident in their choices.

“Incredible innings. There’s no confusion regarding the squad. He’s (Shubman) very clear about what he wants to do. He has been amazing with the bat,” Jaiswal told reporters.

Jaiswal and Gill together laid a solid foundation in testing conditions, with the left-hander scoring a fluent 87 and Gill anchoring the innings with measured strokeplay.

Jaiswal rues missing out on a well-deserved hundred

Jaiswal, who has been in red-hot form in the series, narrowly missed out on what could have been a memorable century. He looked set for a big one after taking the attack to the English bowlers early in his innings but eventually fell for 87. Reflecting on his knock, the youngster remained grounded and focused on the team’s goal.

“I really enjoyed it (batting). I looked to play session by session and then grabbed the opportunity to score runs. They bowled well with the new ball, and the wicket was a bit damp. We — Rishabh Pant, Gill, KL Rahul, and I — are enjoying batting together,” Jaiswal added.
