Fans react as Hayley Matthews smashes stunning century against Zimbabwe in 1st Women’s ODI

The West Indies Women produced a dominant batting display in the first ODI against Zimbabwe Women at the Harare Sports Club, with captain Hayley Matthews leading the charge. The all-rounder anchored the innings brilliantly after winning the toss and electing to bat first, combining patience with controlled aggression to put the visitors in a commanding position.

Matthews found excellent support from Realeanna Grimmond during the opening stages of the innings. The pair added 128 runs for the first wicket, giving West Indies a strong platform before Matthews took complete control of the innings and guided her side towards a formidable total.

Hayley Matthews produces sensational 182-run knock

Matthews continued to bat with authority even after Grimmond departed for a fluent 53 off 70 balls. The West Indies captain remained composed while wickets fell around her, with Stafanie Taylor and Shemaine Campbelle unable to make significant contributions. She eventually reached a magnificent 182 off 156 deliveries, with her innings featuring 26 fours and two sixes.

Matthews maintained a steady scoring rate throughout her stay at the crease and ensured that West Indies kept pushing towards a total of 300. Her knock was the centrepiece of the visitors’ innings and gave Zimbabwe’s bowlers very little room for error. Francesca Chipare was the pick of the hosts’ attack with 2/57 from her 10 overs, while Nyasha Gwanzura, Beloved Biza and Tendai Makusha also picked up wickets.

Matthews guides West Indies to imposing total

The West Indies captain’s innings provided the foundation for a total of 299/6 from 50 overs. After the strong opening partnership with Grimmond, Matthews took responsibility for keeping the scoring rate high through the middle overs and then accelerated whenever opportunities presented themselves. Chinelle Henry added a late burst with a quick 19, helping West Indies finish strongly despite Zimbabwe taking wickets during the closing stages.

The hosts managed to prevent the visitors from crossing the 300-run mark, but they were still left with a daunting target of 300. With Matthews spending almost the entire innings at the crease, West Indies will head into the chase with considerable confidence. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, face a difficult task as they look to prevent the visitors from taking an early lead in the series.
