The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season has been a rollercoaster of high-octane drama, but few storylines have captured the headlines like the polarizing leadership of Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper, Riyan Parag. Despite the Royals enjoying a statistically strong start to the campaign, the cracks in their armour were exposed during a high-scoring defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The loss has triggered a scathing assessment from former Indian cricketer and 1983 World Cup hero, Kris Srikkanth. Known for his ‘straight-talk’ approach, Srikkanth didn’t hold back, roasting the young captain for his underwhelming individual form and questionable tactical manoeuvrers.
Ex-India star takes a dig at Riyan Parag for disappointing IPL 2026 performances
Parag’s ascent to the RR captaincy was one of the most talked-about transitions in the 2026 season, intended to signal a new era of aggressive, youthful leadership. However, legendary opener Srikkanth remains far from impressed. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth delivered a brutal takedown of Parag’s contributions, suggesting that the skipper is currently more focused on optics than outcomes.
“He’s only there for style,” Srikkanth remarked, highlighting the disparity between Parag’s confident post-match demeanour and his dwindling numbers with the bat.
Parag, who has faced a lean patch throughout the 2026 season, has struggled to find the middle of the bat in crucial middle-over scenarios. Srikkanth’s frustration stems from what he perceives as a lack of accountability. According to the veteran, Parag’s inability to lead from the front with the bat is compounded by his defensive decision-making on the field. The critique paints a picture of a captain who is perhaps overwhelmed by the spotlight, prioritizing his persona while the core fundamentals of his game, and the team’s bowling strategy, falter under pressure.

The Ravindra Jadeja conundrum: Tactical genius or Captaincy oversight?
The focal point of Srikkanth’s ire was the baffling underutilization of veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja during the clash against SRH. Despite being one of the most economical and experienced spinners in world cricket, Jadeja did not bowl a single over. Parag later justified the move by citing SRH’s left-hander-heavy batting lineup, a traditional tactical matchup where captains often avoid bowling left-arm orthodox spinners.
Srikkanth, however, dismissed this logic as “absurd.” He argued that a bowler of Jadeja’s caliber transcends basic matchups. “Is there some rule that a left-arm spinner can’t bowl to a left-hander?” Srikkanth questioned on his You Tube channel, pointing out that while Jadeja sat idle, the trio of Sandeep Sharma, Tushar Deshpande, and Ravi Bishnoi leaked 142 runs in just 11 overs.
The Jadeja conundrum raises a significant question for the RR management: is Parag over-indexing on data-driven matchups at the expense of veteran intuition? Srikkanth warned that if the Royals continue to sideline their premier match-winners in favour of rigid tactical tropes, they risk a thrashing in the latter stages of the tournament. For RR to maintain their top-four aspirations, Parag must find a way to balance his style with the hard-nosed tactical pragmatism that the IPL demands.
