Reason why Hardik Pandya is not playing MI vs LSG match

In a surprising development ahead of a crucial Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash, Mumbai Indians were forced to take the field without their regular captain Hardik Pandya against Lucknow Super Giants at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. With both teams struggling near the bottom of the points table, the fixture carried significant importance, but it began with an unexpected twist at the toss.

Instead of Pandya, it was Suryakumar Yadav who walked out to lead Mumbai Indians, while Rishabh Pant represented Lucknow Super Giants. The moment immediately sparked curiosity among fans, as Pandya’s absence raised questions just minutes before the game got underway.

Reason behind Hardik Pandya’s absence in Mumbai Indians’ playing XI

Addressing the situation at the toss, stand-in skipper Suryakumar confirmed that Pandya was unavailable due to illness. The update provided clarity but also dealt a blow to Mumbai Indians, who were hoping to rely on their leader in a must-win scenario.

“He’s not well tonight, so just going into his shoes,” Suryakumar said, indicating that the decision was precautionary rather than tactical.

Pandya’s absence not only affects MI’s leadership but also weakens their balance, given his role as a dynamic all-rounder. His presence in both batting and bowling departments has been crucial throughout the season, making his unavailability a significant setback.

Changes in Mumbai Indians lineup

Mumbai Indians made multiple adjustments to their playing XI to cope with the absence of their captain. One of the biggest positives for the side was the return of Rohit Sharma, adding experience and stability to the batting lineup.

Additionally, Corbin Bosch was drafted into the XI, replacing Trent Boult. The decision suggests a shift in team combination, possibly aimed at strengthening the lower order and providing additional bowling options.

“There’s definitely, Cobin Bosch comes in for Trent Boult and also our very own Rohit Sharma is back,” added Surya.

Suryakumar, after winning the toss, opted to bowl first—an expected move considering the conditions at Wankhede, where chasing sides often enjoy an advantage under lights.

Lucknow Super Giants ring in fresh faces

Lucknow Super Giants also made notable changes to their lineup, as confirmed by skipper Pant. The team introduced Josh Inglis into the side, while young talent Akshat Raghuwanshi was handed his debut cap.

Pant emphasized that the team was looking to test combinations, especially in a tightly contested phase of the tournament. The inclusion of fresh players indicates LSG’s intent to shake things up as they aim to climb the standings.

“We have three changes. Josh Inglis comes in and Mukul goes out and Raghuwanshi is making his debut and bowling will decide later,” said Pant.
