Trevor Penny on Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Rajasthan Royals’ campaign in IPL 2026 hit an early setback after their heavy defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), but the spotlight quickly shifted to a bigger talking point — the role of teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Despite being one of the most explosive batters this season, the 15-year-old has been used as an impact substitute in recent matches, a decision that hasn’t entirely sat well with the youngster himself.

Rajasthan Royals suffer first defeat of IPL 2026

The Royals endured a tough outing at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on April 13, going down by 57 runs while chasing a daunting target of 217. The batting unit failed to fire collectively as they were bowled out for 159, handing Sunrisers Hyderabad a convincing win.

The game’s defining moment came right at the start of the chase when Suryavanshi was dismissed off the very first ball by debutant Praful Hinge. Known for his fearless approach, the youngster couldn’t replicate his recent heroics, leaving the Royals on the back foot immediately.

Trevor Penny reveals why Vaibhav Suryavanshi is not happy with his limited role

Notably, Suryavanshi has been one of the breakout stars of IPL 2026, amassing over 200 runs at an astonishing strike rate exceeding 250. His standout performance came against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he smashed 76 off just 28 balls, setting up a thrilling chase.

However, despite his form, the Royals have opted to use him as an impact player in the last two matches — a tactical decision that limits his involvement to batting duties only. This has sparked discussions among fans and experts alike, especially given the youngster’s all-round energy on the field.

Speaking during the match, Rajasthan Royals assistant coach Trevor Penny shed light on the reasoning behind the move and Suryavanshi’s reaction to it. Penny admitted that the teenager is not entirely pleased with the role, not because of any shortcomings, but due to his passion for fielding.

“The last game he missed out on, he wasn’t very happy because he loves his fielding. It’s not because he’s a poor fielder,” Penny explained during his interaction with broadcasters.

Team balance forces tough selection calls

Penny further clarified that the decision is largely influenced by team balance and the return of South African all-rounder Donovan Ferreira. Ferreira, who had been recovering from a collarbone injury sustained during the SA20 earlier this year, recently cleared his fitness test.

“Donovan has passed his fitness test. He broke his collarbone in the SA20. He’s a gun fielder. It’s good to have him back on the field. Sadly, Vaibhav misses out,” Penny added.

The management appears to be prioritizing a combination that offers flexibility in both batting and fielding, even if it means restricting one of their brightest young talents.
