Connor Esterhuizen announced his arrival in 50-overs cricket in style as his maiden ODI century, followed by a superb bowling display from Duan Jansen, helped South Africa beat Namibia by 157 runs in the second game of the three-match series in Windhoek.

Esterhuizen smashed 119 runs, while Tony de Zorzi added a valuable 79 as South Africa posted 335/9 after being asked to bat first. Namibia’s chase never really got going as Jansen claimed 4/31 and Ethan Bosch returned 3/27 to bowl the hosts out for 178 in 41.5 overs.

The victory gave South Africa an unassailable lead in the series with one game still to play.

Connor Esterhuizen hits maiden ODI century

Namibia’s bowlers made a promising start and kept South Africa under control during the opening powerplay. The visitors reached only 40/1 after 10 overs, with Jordan Hermann dismissed for 20 off 24 balls by Jack Brassell.

Esterhuizen initially took his time, but once the fielding restrictions were lifted, the young batter began to find his range. De Zorzi also settled into his innings, allowing the pair to build a strong partnership.

After De Zorzi brought up his half-century, Esterhuizen shifted through the gears. A series of powerful sixes followed, culminating in his maiden ODI hundred in the 33rd over when he cleared the boundary against Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus.

South Africa cross 330 despite late wickets

Esterhuizen and De Zorzi appeared set to take South Africa towards a huge total and were closing in on a 200-run partnership.

However, Ruben Trumpelmann returned to remove Esterhuizen for 119 in the 36th over. De Zorzi and Matthew Breetzke also departed soon after, leaving South Africa at 233/4 in the 39th over.

Dewald Brevis briefly provided another burst of momentum with two sixes off Trumpelmann, although the bowler eventually won the battle.

Bosch then struck three sixes in the 48th over, but Namibia fought back with wickets in the closing stages. Bosch, Jason Smith, Jansen and Prenelan Subrayen all fell during the final three overs.

Nqobani Mokoena‘s six in the last over pushed South Africa beyond 330, with the visitors finishing on 335/9.

Duan Jansen, Ethan Bosch destroy Namibia’s top order

Namibia’s response quickly turned into a collapse.

Bosch and Jansen ripped through the top order, combining to take the first five wickets. Bosch removed Michael van Lingen for a nine-ball duck before Jansen dismissed Malan Kruger without scoring.

Jan Frylinck was then caught off Bosch, leaving Namibia reeling at 1/3 in the fourth over.

Jansen struck again to remove Louren Steenkamp for 12, while Bosch claimed his second wicket when Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton was caught behind for six.

At 35/5 in the 11th over, Namibia were in serious trouble.

Gerhard Erasmus leads brief fightback

Skipper Erasmus refused to give up, putting together useful partnerships with Zane Green and later Jan Balt.

Erasmus and Balt added more than 50 for the seventh wicket, with Erasmus reaching his half-century during the partnership. Their resistance finally ended when Balt was run out for 26 following another outstanding piece of fielding from Brevis.

Erasmus soon followed, chipping a catch to cover to give debutant Mokoena his first ODI wicket.

Trumpelmann and Waldo Smith added 38 for the ninth wicket, but Jansen returned to trap Smith in front for his fourth wicket.

Bosch then finished the job by dismissing Trumpelmann, bowling Namibia out for 178 in the 42nd over.

South Africa seal series in Windhoek

The 157-run victory capped a dominant all-round performance from South Africa. Esterhuizen’s breakthrough century provided the foundation, while Jansen and Bosch ensured Namibia never came close to chasing down 336.

With the series already secured, South Africa will now look to complete a clean sweep in the final ODI on Sunday.
