Ravi Shastri names India's XI for the semi-final game against Australia in Champions Trophy 2025

As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 enters its decisive phase, all eyes are on the much-anticipated semi-final clash between India and Australia. Scheduled for March 4 at the Dubai International Stadium, this high-stakes encounter has cricket enthusiasts buzzing. Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has weighed in on India’s strategy, recommending continuity in the playing XI that secured a commanding victory against New Zealand in their last group-stage match. Here’s a detailed look at Shastri’s insights and the rationale behind his preferred line-up.

The winning formula: Why stick with the same XI?

India’s dominant performance against New Zealand showcased their adaptability to Dubai’s challenging conditions. The slow and tired pitch proved to be a haven for spinners, with India’s four-pronged spin attack dismantling the Kiwi batting lineup. Spinners bowled 37.3 overs, claiming nine of the ten wickets, with Varun Chakravarthy leading the charge with a five-wicket haul.

Shastri emphasized that the same conditions are likely to prevail in the semi-final. “The square is a little tired at the moment; people have run on the pitch that is going to be used the day after, so the spinners will again come into play,” Shastri stated in an interview with ICC. With less than 48 hours between matches, Shastri believes that maintaining consistency in team selection will give India a strategic edge.

Spin over pace: A tactical choice

India’s decision to field four spinners against New Zealand was a masterstroke, and Shastri believes this approach will be equally effective against Australia. The sluggish nature of Dubai’s pitch makes it difficult for batters to score freely against spin, as evidenced by India’s ability to defend a modest target of 250 in their previous game.

Shastri highlighted the importance of setting a competitive total if India bats first. “Put anything over 240-250, and it’s going to be very competitive in a big game like a semi-final,” he remarked.

India to face a formidable Australian side

While India enter the semi-final with momentum on their side, Australia pose a significant challenge. Led by Steve Smith, the Australian team boast a balanced line-up with power-hitters and an effective bowling attack. However, India’s familiarity with Dubai’s conditions and their recent success make them strong contenders.
