Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket

In a heartfelt announcement on May 7, 2025, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma revealed his decision to retire from Test cricket. The 38-year-old shared the news via an Instagram story, posting a picture of his Test cap with the number “280” embroidered on it, signifying his Test appearances for India.

Rohit took to his official Instagram account to share the news with his fans. In his message, Rohit expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent India in the longest format and thanked fans for their unwavering support over the years.

“Hello everyone. I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years,” wrote Rohit in his Instagram story.

Continued commitment to ODI format

While Rohit is stepping away from Tests, he confirmed his intent to continue representing India in the One Day International (ODI) format. “I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” he stated in his announcement. Fans can look forward to seeing the “Hitman” in action during the upcoming ODI series, where he is expected to lead the team and add to his already impressive tally of 12,012 runs in 262 ODIs.

A glorious Test career comes to an end

Rohit, known for his elegant batting and leadership, made his Test debut in 2013 against West Indies. Over the course of his career, he played 59 Test matches, scoring 3,737 runs at an average of 46.71, including 12 centuries and 16 fifties. His highest Test score of 212 came against South Africa in 2019. As a captain, Rohit led India to several memorable victories. His decision to step away from Test cricket marks the end of an era for Indian cricket in the red-ball format.

Rohit’s leadership and batting prowess in Test cricket have left an indelible mark, and his departure from the format will undoubtedly be felt as India prepares for future Test challenges.
