Chennai Super Kings (CSK) continued their late surge in IPL 2026 with an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad made it clear after the game who he believes is driving the team forward this season. Gaikwad described the star batter as the “backbone” of the CSK batting unit, praising both his consistency and impact under pressure.
Notably, the five-time champions delivered a complete team performance in Delhi, first restricting DC to a modest total before chasing it down comfortably with 15 balls to spare. At the heart of the victory was the star batter, whose batting brilliance once again showcased his ability to absorb pressure and finish games with authority.
CSK dominate DC in crucial away fixture
Delhi Capitals opted to bat first after winning the toss on a slow and slightly tricky surface. However, CSK’s bowlers adapted brilliantly to the conditions and never allowed the hosts to build momentum.
Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad played key roles in controlling the middle overs with disciplined spells. Hosein gave away only 19 runs and picked up one wicket, while Noor struck twice and conceded just 22 runs. The spin duo forced Delhi’s batters into a defensive approach, making strokeplay increasingly difficult.
Tristan Stubbs tried to steady the innings with 38 runs, while Sameer Rizvi remained unbeaten on 40, but Delhi Capitals could only manage 155/7 in their 20 overs — a total that appeared below par once the conditions eased in the second innings. CSK’s chase began cautiously and they were reduced to 45/2 early on. That brought Sanju Samson and Kartik Sharma together at a crucial stage of the game. Samson initially took time to settle, carefully assessing the pitch and conditions before accelerating at the right moment. His unbeaten 87 off 52 balls included seven fours and six sixes, while Kartik Sharma provided excellent support with an unbeaten 41.
The pair added an unbroken 114-run partnership off just 66 deliveries, guiding Chennai to victory in just 17.3 overs and significantly boosting their net run rate.
Ruturaj Gaikwad picks ‘backbone’ of CSK team
After the match, Gaikwad showered praise on Samson for consistently delivering in pressure situations throughout the season. Samson is currently the only player in the tournament to score two centuries along with a half-century. With 402 runs already this season, he has firmly established himself among the leading contenders for the Orange Cap.
“On the batting side, I would say, I mean, more than grateful to have Sanju in the side after the tournament he had even in the World Cup and even now. So obviously he’s backbone now,” Gaikwad said during the post-match presentation.
The CSK skipper’s comments reflected the growing importance of Samson in Chennai’s campaign this year. The wicketkeeper-batter has been one of the most consistent performers in IPL 2026 and has repeatedly rescued the team from difficult situations.

Playoff hopes still alive for five-time champions
The win over Delhi Capitals has given Chennai Super Kings a massive boost in the playoff race. CSK now sit sixth on the points table with 10 points from 10 matches and remain firmly in contention for a top-four finish. Historically, 16 points has usually been considered the safe qualification mark in the 10-team IPL format. That means Chennai will likely need to win at least three of their remaining four matches to secure a playoff berth.
If CSK manage to win all four of their remaining league games, they would finish with 18 points — a tally that could even push them into the top two positions on the table.
