The 58th match of the IPL 2026 season delivered an absolute classic at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Thursday. Facing off in a high-stakes encounter, a resilient Mumbai Indians (MI) unit clashed with the Punjab Kings (PBKS). With regular skipper Hardik Pandya conspicuously absent from the squad and explosive batter Suryakumar Yadav sitting out following the birth of his child, the captaincy armband was handed to premier speedster Jasprit Bumrah. Leading the five-time champions for the very first time, Bumrah managed his troops brilliantly in a high-scoring thriller, culminating in a spectacular four-wicket victory for Mumbai with just one ball to spare.
Shardul Thakur breaks silence on Hardik Pandya’s prolonged absence from recent Mumbai Indians clashes
Following the exhilarating victory, MI all-rounder Shardul Thakur addressed the media in the post-match press conference to clear the air regarding Hardik Pandya’s ongoing absence. Hardik has been missing from action since MI’s high-octane clash against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK), sparking intense speculation and trade rumors online.
Thakur firmly dismissed the social media gossip, clarifying that the skipper is sidelined strictly due to an injury. According to Thakur, Hardik had traveled to Raipur for the fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 10 but was ultimately deemed unfit to play. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation and training back in Mumbai.
Optimistic about the captain’s recovery, Thakur revealed that the team management expects Hardik to rejoin the squad in Kolkata for their upcoming high-profile match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) next Wednesday.
“Hardik is injured, so he could not travel for a couple of games. He went to Raipur [for the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 10], but could not play. He is training in Mumbai now, and I expect him to be back in Kolkata and play against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) next Wednesday. Players like them, we always miss the quality,” Thakur stated during the post-match press conference.

MI outshine PBKS in a nail-biting IPL 2026 encounter
The match itself was a showcase of pure T20 entertainment. After being put in to bat, the Punjab Kings put up a formidable total of 200/8 in their allotted 20 overs. PBKS opener Prabhsimran Singh led the charge with a blistering 57 off 32 balls, decorated with 6 fours and 4 sixes. Handy contribution from Azmatullah Omarzai (38 off 17) kept the scoreboard ticking at an economy of 10 runs per over. However, Thakur turned the tide for MI, finishing with sensational figures of 4/39 in his 4 overs to restrict PBKS from crossing the 220-run mark with an early damage.
In response, Mumbai Indians pulled off a clinical chase, reaching 205/4 in 19.5 overs. Opening the innings as an Impact Player, Rohit Sharma provided a steady anchorage with 25 off 26 balls, while wicketkeeper-bat Ryan Rickelton injected early momentum with a fiery 48 off just 23 deliveries.
The undisputed hero of the night, however, was Tilak Varma. The youngster smashed an unbeaten 75 off a mere 33 balls, striking at an astonishing rate of 227.27. Alongside a blistering finish from Will Jacks (25* off 10 balls), Tilak’s ice-cold composure under pressure guided MI to their fourth win of the season, earning him the Player of the Match honours.
