Why mehidy hasan miraz is not playing the first Test

The first Test of the two-match series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh has begun at the iconic Galle International Stadium, with Bangladesh opting to bat first after winning the toss. However, the match started on a surprising note for fans and experts alike, as Bangladesh were forced to leave out one of their most dependable performers—Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Reason why Mehidy Hasan Miraz is not playing the first Test

While Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto didn’t disclose any specific details at the toss, a report from ESPNcricinfo later confirmed that Mehidy is suffering from a bout of fever. The 26-year-old has been ruled out of the Galle Test on medical grounds.

This is a rare absence for the all-rounder, who had played 21 consecutive Tests since 2021. Notably, Mehidy was Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer in the last World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and has been equally valuable with the ball in subcontinent conditions. His absence disrupts Bangladesh’s team balance significantly, especially on a spin-friendly Galle pitch.

Mehidy’s ability to contribute in both departments makes him one of the most vital cogs in Bangladesh’s Test setup. He was expected to play a major role with his spin against Sri Lanka’s predominantly right-handed batting line-up and also bolster the lower-middle order with the bat. In his absence, Bangladesh have options like Taijul Islam.

Angelo Mathews’ farewell Test adds emotional weight to the contest

Adding to the significance of the Galle Test is the farewell of legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews, who is playing his final Test match. Prior to the start of the game, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) honoured Mathews with a special ceremony, where he was joined by his family and teammates. The 37-year-old is among Sri Lanka’s greatest Test players, and this match marks the end of an era in Lankan cricket.
