India will take on Zimbabwe in the opening T20I of the five-match series at Harare Sports Club on Thursday, July 23. The Men in Blue will be aiming to bounce back after a disappointing run in the shortest format, having lost their last two bilateral T20I series following their triumphant ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. Ahead of the series opener, former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath has shared his preferred playing XI for the visitors.

With several youngsters earning opportunities alongside a handful of experienced names, Badrinath has opted for a balanced combination that blends explosive batting with a varied bowling attack. His XI features a number of fresh faces while also retaining the core players expected to lead India’s rebuilding phase in T20Is.

Subramaniam Badrinath backs youthful batting unit for 1st T20I

Badrinath has entrusted teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma with the responsibility of opening the innings. The duo offers an aggressive left-handed opening combination capable of taking advantage of the Powerplay.

Ishan Kishan has been slotted at No. 3 as the designated wicketkeeper, followed by captain Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma in the middle order. Badrinath has also included two pace-bowling all-rounders in Shivam Dube and Suryansh Shedge, giving India additional batting depth while maintaining multiple bowling options.

Notably, Prabhsimran Singh, Rinku Singh, Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma do not find a place in his preferred XI despite being part of the squad for the Zimbabwe tour.

Balanced bowling attack to lead India’s revival

For the bowling department, Badrinath has selected a balanced attack comprising two specialist spinners and two frontline fast bowlers. Harsh Dubey and Ravi Bishnoi form the spin duo, providing variation through left-arm spin and leg-spin.

The pace attack is led by the exciting duo of Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav, both of whom possess the ability to generate high pace and trouble batters with the new ball. The presence of Dube and Shedge further strengthens the seam-bowling resources, giving India multiple options throughout the innings.

India will also be hoping to end their recent struggles in T20Is. Since lifting the 2026 T20 World Cup trophy, the Men in Blue have endured six consecutive completed defeats in the format, including series losses to Ireland and England. However, they will draw confidence from their dominant record against Zimbabwe, having won 11 of their 14 T20I meetings while remaining unbeaten in bilateral T20I series against the African side.
