David Warner

Former Australia opener David Warner has sparked plenty of discussion among cricket fans after revealing his choices for the best batters in each format of international cricket. Rather than opting for established superstars across the board, Warner picked three players from the current generation.

Warner shared his choices on Sunday after the England Barmy Army asked fans to name their preferred batter in Test, ODI and T20I cricket.

David Warner’s surprise pick for Test cricket

The most eye-catching selection was Harry Brook as Warner’s best Test batter.

Brook has established himself as one of England’s most influential red-ball players since making his Test debut in 2022. His aggressive approach has become a defining feature of his batting, but his record has also demonstrated an ability to convert starts into substantial scores.

The England batter has accumulated more than 3,600 Test runs at an average above 53, including 10 centuries. His career-best score of 317 against Pakistan remains one of the standout innings of his young Test career.

Warner’s selection is particularly interesting because Test cricket has traditionally been dominated in such conversations by established names such as Joe Root and Steve Smith. Choosing Brook instead highlights how highly Warner rates the next generation of international batters.

Warner’s ODI vote

For ODI cricket, Warner went with India captain Shubman Gill.

Gill’s consistency in the 50-over format has made him one of India’s most important batters. He currently sits at the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings and has built an impressive record despite being relatively young in international cricket.

The right-hander has scored more than 3,700 ODI runs, with 11 centuries and 20 fifties. His latest major landmark came against the West Indies in Guwahati, where he smashed an unbeaten 223, the highest individual score by a batter in an ODI chase.

Gill’s ability to combine classical strokeplay with controlled aggression has made him a central figure in India’s ODI plans.

Who is Warner’s choice in the T20Is?

Warner’s third selection was another Indian opener, Abhishek Sharma, for T20I cricket.

The left-hander has quickly developed a reputation for attacking bowling from the opening over. His exceptional strike rate and willingness to take risks have made him one of the most exciting young batters in international T20 cricket.

Abhishek has already scored more than 1,900 T20I runs and has three centuries to his name. His highest T20I score is 135, while his explosive approach has consistently put opposition bowling attacks under pressure.

His recent performances have further strengthened his reputation. In the Asian Games 2026 final against Pakistan, Abhishek scored a rapid 61 from 28 deliveries, helping India post a competitive total before eventually securing the gold medal.
