VVS Laxman on Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Fifteen-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi capped off a dream T20I series against Zimbabwe by finishing as the leading run-scorer and collecting both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards. While the teenager’s fearless batting played a pivotal role in India‘s 3-0 series whitewash, interim head coach VVS Laxman believes there is still one important aspect of his game that requires attention.

Suryavanshi amassed 151 runs across three matches, including a match-winning 81 in the final T20I at the Harare Sports Club. His remarkable performances also made him the youngest male cricketer to receive the Player of the Series award in international cricket, underlining his rapid rise after impressive outings in IPL 2026 and the ICC Under-19 World Cup earlier this year.

VVS Laxman points out one concerning area for Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Despite showering praise on the youngster’s attitude and commitment, Laxman made it clear that improving fitness remains the next major step in Suryavanshi’s development.

Speaking after India’s series-clinching victory, the former India captain highlighted the teenager’s willingness to contribute in every department but emphasized the need to build his physical conditioning.

“The one area we want him to improve is his overall fitness. He’s a very young boy. He himself wants to get better in every aspect of the game. Even today, when he got injured [while attempting a diving catch running in from deep square leg], he still wanted to stay on the field. It was our physio who asked him to come off. That’s the eagerness and earnestness he has to contribute in every possible way to the team,” said Laxman as quoted by Cricinfo.

The incident occurred during the third T20I when Suryavanshi injured himself while diving in the deep. Although eager to continue, the Indian team management opted to take a cautious approach and substituted him after medical advice.

Laxman’s comments reflect India’s long-term plans for the teenager, with the coaching staff keen to ensure that his physical development matches his immense batting talent.

From early struggles to series hero in Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe tour marked a dramatic turnaround for Suryavanshi after a difficult start to his international career in England. The left-handed batter struggled to make an impact in his first three appearances but quickly rediscovered his aggressive style on Zimbabwean soil.

His standout knock came in the third and final T20I, where he smashed 81 off just 49 deliveries. The innings laid the foundation for India’s imposing total and ultimately helped secure a convincing 35-run victory, completing a clean sweep of the series.

Apart from his batting exploits, Suryavanshi also impressed in the field. He pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett off Mayank Yadav’s bowling, showcasing noticeable improvement in his fielding standards. His all-round contributions highlighted a player growing in confidence and adapting quickly to the demands of international cricket.

Bright future awaits India’s teenage sensation

Suryavanshi’s performances in Zimbabwe have further strengthened his reputation as one of India’s most exciting young talents. After earning his national call-up through consistent displays in domestic and age-group cricket, he has now shown that he can deliver on the international stage as well.

However, Laxman’s emphasis on fitness serves as a reminder that the 15-year-old remains a work in progress. With India’s management focused on nurturing him carefully, improving his endurance and overall conditioning could help unlock an even higher level of performance in the years ahead.

For now, Suryavanshi leaves Zimbabwe with records, trophies and invaluable experience, while also carrying a clear message from his coach on what it will take to become a complete international cricketer.
