Wasim Jaffer on Mohammed Shami for ODI World Cup 2027

The countdown to the ODI World Cup 2027 is gradually bringing India’s team combination and bowling options into focus. Scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, the tournament will present a significant challenge for the participating teams, particularly their pace attacks. India reached the final of the 2023 edition but suffered a defeat against Australia in the summit clash. With preparations for the next World Cup on the horizon, former India batter Wasim Jaffer has backed the return of experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami, insisting that his recent performances make him a strong candidate for selection.

Shami’s potential comeback has gained attention following Bhuvneshwar Kumar‘s return to India’s T20I setup. The experienced seamer was selected for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, beginning on October 22. Bhuvneshwar last represented India in November 2022, and his selection has raised hopes that the selectors could also consider other established fast bowlers who have remained outside the national setup.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Wasim Jaffer Official, Jaffer expressed hope that the new selection committee would give Shami an opportunity to return to international cricket.

“I think now that a new selection committee has come in, we will have to see what decision they make when picking the Test squad for the New Zealand series. The new committee has given Bhuvneshwar Kumar an opportunity, so I hope they also consider Mohammed Shami,” Jaffer said.

The former batter pointed towards Shami’s consistent performances across domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League as reasons to consider him for a comeback. According to Jaffer, the veteran pacer has continued to demonstrate his ability to contribute despite being away from the Indian team.

Shami’s experience could also prove valuable as India look to assemble a dependable bowling attack for the 2027 World Cup. His ability to deliver with the new ball and take wickets makes him an option worth evaluating during the selection process.

Shami’s domestic performances strengthen his case

Shami’s numbers in domestic cricket provide a strong foundation for Jaffer’s argument. During the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, the 36-year-old claimed 37 wickets in seven matches at an average of 16.72, demonstrating his effectiveness in the longest format.

He also represented Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026, taking 12 wickets in 13 matches. More recently, the fast bowler picked up seven wickets in the Duleep Trophy, continuing his productive run in domestic cricket. Jaffer highlighted these performances while assessing Shami’s current form.

“Shami has been performing consistently. He took 37 wickets last season as well, and his IPL campaign wasn’t bad either. He has started this season very well and has performed well in the Duleep Trophy too,” he added.

Jaffer endorses Shami’s inclusion for New Zealand tour

Jaffer believes Shami should also be considered for India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand, arguing that the conditions make his experience particularly relevant. The tour could offer the selectors an opportunity to assess their fast-bowling options ahead of future international assignments.

“I believe we will need Shami on a tour like New Zealand’s. He should be part of the squad. I genuinely feel that if he is not playing, it is India’s loss,” Jaffer explained.

With the new selection committee having already recalled Bhuvneshwar for the T20I series, Shami’s recent performances could strengthen his case for renewed consideration. His inclusion is not confirmed, but Jaffer’s endorsement adds to the discussion surrounding India’s pace-bowling resources ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
