Dewald Brevis dismissal sparks controversy

A pulsating clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday was overshadowed by a dramatic DRS controversy involving young CSK batter Dewald Brevis. While the game itself delivered edge-of-the-seat action until the very last ball, a missed review opportunity proved decisive in shaping the outcome, handing RCB a narrow win.

Dewald Brevis’s LBW decision stirs controversy

The incident unfolded during CSK’s tense run-chase of 216 when Brevis came to the crease in the 17th over, following Ayush Mhatre’s departure after a well-compiled 94. Facing his first delivery from Lungi Ngidi, Brevis was struck on the pads and adjudged LBW by the on-field umpire. In the same moment, a throw from the fielders hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end, adding to the confusion as both batters attempted a run.

Amid this chaos, Brevis appeared unsure and turned to Ravindra Jadeja to discuss a possible review. However, with the DRS timer not visible on the big screen, the 15-second window silently lapsed. When Brevis finally signaled for the review, the umpire denied it, citing a time breach. Jadeja, clearly unhappy with the handling of the situation, was seen voicing his displeasure to the officials, but the decision was irreversible.

What followed only deepened the controversy. Television replays soon confirmed what CSK fans feared — the delivery would have clearly missed the stumps. Brevis, dismissed for a golden duck, was left ruing a lost opportunity that could have changed the tide of the match.
The decision also reignited debate over whether the original LBW call was too hasty. With the young South African batter walking back and the required run rate climbing, momentum tilted in RCB’s favour.

The incident has sparked debate among fans and pundits alike, with many questioning the absence of the DRS timer on screen and whether players should be penalized in such circumstances.

RCB hold their nerve to win a thriller

Despite the blow, Chennai didn’t fold. Jadeja launched a spirited counterattack, scoring an unbeaten 77, and nearly took his side over the line. The Super Kings required 15 off the final over, with veteran finisher MS Dhoni at the crease. But RCB’s Yash Dayal rose to the occasion, removing Dhoni and leaving CSK with 13 to get off the last three deliveries.

The equation came down to four needed off the final ball. Shivam Dube, facing a pinpoint yorker, could manage only a single — handing RCB a thrilling victory by three runs.
