Ramiz Raja

In a moment that sparked both amusement and outrage, former Pakistan captain and seasoned commentator Ramiz Raja committed a glaring on-air gaffe during the post-match presentation of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025.

Ramiz Raja’s on-air blunder: ‘IPL’ slip in PSL 2025

Following Match 12 between Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars on April 22, Raja mistakenly referred to the PSL as the “HBL IPL”, while handing out the ‘Catch of the Match’ award. The slip occurred when Raja was applauding a spectacular catch by Irish pacer Joshua Little to dismiss Fakhar Zaman in the second innings. The words “Catch of the IPL” instead of “Catch of the PSL” came out as Raja praised the fielder’s athleticism.

Given the fierce rivalry and branding contrast between the PSL and Indian Premier League (IPL), the slip-up drew instant attention. Social media platforms were flooded with clips of the moment, with fans quickly catching on and many demanding an official apology. The phrase “HBL IPL” began trending in Pakistan within hours, turning the post-match ceremony into an unintended headline. Critics argued that the confusion perhaps stemmed from the increasing overlap between the two leagues this season, with both running parallel. Regardless of intent, the incident sparked a major buzz in cricketing circles across both countries.

PSL and IPL clash for the first time

This slip-up has drawn more attention than usual as it coincides with a historic first in cricket broadcasting: the PSL and IPL are running concurrently for the first time in a decade. Traditionally held in February and March, the PSL was rescheduled to an April-May window to accommodate the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 preparations and to improve the availability of overseas players. The scheduling shift also helped avoid clashes with other T20 leagues like SA20, ILT20 and the Big Bash League (BBL). This year, the IPL began on March 22 and will conclude on May 25, while the PSL commenced on April 11 and is set to wrap up on May 18. To compete for viewership, PSL organizers have even delayed match start times to begin an hour after IPL games.
