Simon Harmer delivered a crucial breakthrough for South Africa on Day 2 of the third Test against Australia in Cape Town, producing a sensational spell that left the visitors struggling to maintain their momentum. The experienced off-spinner struck twice in the same over, dismissing Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne to swing the contest in the hosts’ favour.
Harmer’s double strike came after South African captain Temba Bavuma introduced him into the attack at a critical juncture. The decision proved inspired, as the spinner immediately made an impact with two deliveries that exposed Australia’s vulnerability against spin.
Simon Harmer gets rid of Marnus Labuschagne with a beauty
Harmer began his decisive over by ending the resistance of Head, who had looked reasonably comfortable at the crease. The Australian batter had scored 41 runs before Harmer dismissed him on the fourth delivery, providing South Africa with the breakthrough they desperately needed. However, the best moment of the over was still to come. Just two deliveries later, Harmer produced an excellent ball to send Labuschagne back to the pavilion for a five-ball duck.
The off-spinner bowled a flatter delivery on a good length, getting it to drift away from the right-handed batter. Labuschagne remained on the back foot and attempted to play at the ball as it turned away from him. However, he found himself caught in an awkward position and could not prevent the delivery from taking the outside edge.
Aiden Markram, stationed at first slip, reacted sharply to complete an impressive low catch to his right. The dismissal sparked celebrations among the South African players, with Harmer’s remarkable over delivering two important wickets without conceding a run.

Labuschagne’s Test struggles continues
Labuschagne’s latest dismissal has added another chapter to a difficult period in his Test career. Once regarded as one of Australia’s most dependable batters in the longest format, the right-hander has struggled to reproduce the consistency that established his reputation.
His failure to make an impact in Cape Town will inevitably invite further questions about his position in Australia’s batting order, particularly at number three, where the responsibility of providing stability is significant. Since his last Test century against England at Manchester in July 2023, Labuschagne has endured an extended drought without reaching three figures. His inability to convert starts into substantial scores has become a recurring concern.
Unlike a batter who consistently falls for single-digit scores, Labuschagne has frequently managed to survive the early stages of an innings, only to lose his wicket after settling down. Such dismissals have prevented him from turning promising starts into match-defining contributions.
Australia’s selectors have continued to back Labuschagne despite his inconsistent returns, with batting conditions around the world and the availability of suitable alternatives influencing their decisions. However, the pressure surrounding his place in the team is increasing. His disappointing performances on the South African tour have made his position increasingly difficult to defend, especially as Australia look for greater reliability in their top order.
