The second edition of the SA20 will commence on January 10 and conclude on February 10. The upcoming edition will feature a total of six teams as in the inaugural edition – Durban Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape. All six teams are owned by Indian Premier League franchises.
The tournament will kick off with the clash between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. There will be a total of 34 matches and each team will play ten matches in the league stage, five at home and five away.
The Sunrisers, led by Aiden Markram are the reigning champions, having won the title in the inaugural edition after defeating Pretoria Capitals. The veteran South African all-rounder will lead the team in the forthcoming season as well. Moreover, he was the top scorer for his side in the first season, third overall, scoring 366 runs, which included a century and half-century. He is expected to showcase his batting prowess in the forthcoming season as well.
Joburg, on the other hand, enjoyed a memorable campaign in the previous edition, finishing second in the points table with six wins from ten games. Notably, they were knocked out of the tournament after their semi-final defeat against Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The Faf du Plessis-led side will be aiming to take revenge on that clash when both sides lock horns in the opening game.
Speaking about the pitch at St George’s Park, it has a balanced wicket which will assist both the batters and bowlers at an equivalent level. Batting first at this venue will be challenging as chasing is relatively easy. As per the previous records, the average first-inning T20I score at this venue is 130. In particular, both sides are expected to grant a thrilling experience for the fans around the globe.
