Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has criticized former player Enzo Fernandez’s conduct during his transfer to Chelsea. Despite being the best young player at the recent World Cup and contributing four goals and seven assists during his six-month stint at Benfica, Fernandez pushed for a £106.8 million move to Chelsea, which was completed on deadline day after a month of negotiations.

Schmidt, who was desperate for Fernandez to stay, expressed his disappointment in the midfielder’s stance in leaving Benfica. In a statement, Schmidt said: “It’s always difficult to lose a good player in the winter market. But today we showed that we are a good team without him, that we are capable of playing good football without him, that the players are focused on getting the most points, to be champions. Benfica is much bigger than a player.”

“We just need players who are happy to play for Benfica, who are passionate. We had a player who wanted to leave and a club willing to pay the clause, we couldn’t do anything. We accepted and looked ahead,” the Benfica boss said.

Schmidt’s comments highlight the disappointment felt by the club at losing such a talented player, but also emphasize the importance of players being passionate and dedicated to the club. The manager’s comments also suggest that while the loss of Fernandez is significant, the club is capable of thriving without him.

Chelsea’s co-controlling owner, Behdad Eghbali, led negotiations for the transfer of Fernandez from London. A payment plan for the record fee was eventually agreed upon, with Benfica agreeing to a payment structure of three instalments over two years. Fernandez is set to sign an eight-and-a-half-year deal with the club.

Concluding the news, Roger Schmidt has criticized former player Enzo Fernandez’s conduct during his transfer to Chelsea, expressing disappointment in the player’s stance in leaving the club. Despite the loss, Schmidt emphasized the importance of players being passionate and dedicated to the club, and suggested that the club is capable of thriving without Fernandez.
