Manchester City and RB Leipzig faced off in the second leg of the Round of 16 tie at the Etihad on Wednesday. After an even first leg, which ended with a scoreline of 1-1, the two teams were expected to battle out for a result. But on the night, the English side not only won the game but also blew away the German side with a 7-0 drubbing to march into the quarterfinals.

Manchester City’s star Norwegian striker Erling Haaland starred for the Cityzens with five goals to sink Leipzig. City opened the scoring with Haaland converting a controversial penalty in the 22nd minute. And only two minutes later, he scored his second, before capping off a first-half hat-trick in the stoppage time.

Manchester City’s veteran defender Ilkay Gundogan scored the fourth goal on the night in the 49th minute, followed by two more goals by Haaland in the 53rd and 57th minutes. Manchester City’s talismanic player Kevin De Bruyne scored the 7th goal in the second minute of stoppage time.

Manchester City dominated every department in the game and on either side of the field. They had 23 shots with 16 on target, 67 per cent possession, 647 passes and 10 corners. Leipzig, on the other hand, had four shots with one on target, 33 per cent possession, 332 passes and 0 corners.

In Manchester City, centre-back Manuel Akanji and De Bruyne received yellow cards. From Leipzig, striker Timo Werner and full-back Benjamin Henrichs went into the referee’s books.

Porto and Inter Milan also squared off on the night in the second leg. Inter won the first leg 1-0, and the slender lead remained intact for the Italian side in the tie as the match ended with a 0-0 draw. The remaining matches in the round will be battled out between Napoli and Eintracht Frankfurt, and Real Madrid and Liverpool.
